Welcome and Opening
Transforming Results and Relationships through Conversation*

We lead through conversation yet give little thought to the quality and nature of our communication. Whether at the Dean/Director/Chair level of academic leadership or engaged faculty, paying attention to how and what you say can transform relationships, empower others, and generate better results. Current research indicates that emotional intelligence has a significant impact on our ability to communicate successfully. In this opening session, participants will learn about a framework for emotional intelligence that will serve as the intellectual anchor for understanding the transformative power of conversation.
Facilitator: Kim D’Abreu
Moderator: Susan Dean-Baar, PhD, RN, Dean and Professor, College of Nursing, University of Missouri-St. Louis, St. Louis, MO, and Chair, AACN Executive Development Series Sub-Committee

10:00-10:45 a.m.
The Power of Listening*
Listening is more than half of conversation, and the quality of one’s listening determines leadership effectiveness. In this session, academic leaders will learn about the three levels of listening, how to master the listening process, and practice techniques for unleashing possibility and results.
Facilitator: Jim Svagerko

10:45-11:00 a.m.
Mindfulness Practice
Good Morning Coffee and Tea Break

11:00 a.m.-11:50 a.m.
Inquiry: Using Questions to Solve Problems, Uncover Insight, and Empower Others*
Many academic leaders believe that their job is to answer questions, not ask them. Unfortunately, when you hold this belief, you miss out on one of the most powerful conversational moves that is available to us as leaders - the power of questions. In this session, attendees will explore the potential for sparking trust and innovation through inquiry, while learning the methodology of inquiry. This strategy can have lasting impact on relationships with institutional leadership, faculty, community stakeholders, and the general public.
Facilitator: LeeAnn Wurster-Naefe

The Doing of Leadership*
A key to successful leadership is developing and empowering others. Whether you are at the Dean/Director/Chair level, learn how to lead through influence and achieve optimum outcomes. Some tools to be discussed include the basics of delegation, enlisting others, building trust, and the concept of positive accountability.
Facilitator: Kim D’Abreu

Does your presence convey confidence, professionalism, and gravitas? Are you perceived as a key contributor at work? Do you inspire others with vision? Discover how to bring together your values, strengths, and natural attributes to develop an effective, authentic leadership presence that you can bring to a variety of situations. Explore and practice how small changes in your mindset and physical presence can dramatically impact how you lead teams and groups, and how you are perceived. In this highly experiential session, participants will learn how to leverage mindfulness and centering practices to ground their presence under pressure and make a shift from reactionary to intentional engagement.

Connecting Across Generations*
This session will present research about generational distinctions and how they affect us at work. In an academic setting, generational dynamics are inherent at all levels of interaction-students, faculty, staff and leaders. Come examine what motivates, inspires, and builds trust and loyalty with each generation. We will focus as much on commonalities and shared concerns as differences. Attendees will engage in robust discussions about how they experience different generations at work and will share insights and strategies that help connect rather than divide generations.
Facilitator: Kim D’Abreu

Mindfulness Practice

9:30-10:40 a.m.
Collaboration Circles*
In this dynamic closing session, attendees will synthesize what they have learned about leading through conversation. Organized around critical themes in academic nursing, attendees will share ideas, solutions, and best practices while using leadership communication and collaboration skills learned during the previous day. This session is designed to help attendees to strengthen and expand their professional networks.
