Cynthia Cleveland, DNP, RN
Associate Director for Patient Care Services

Cynthia D. Cleveland, DNP, RN, NE-BC was appointed as Associate Director for Patient Care Services at the Birmingham VA Medical Center effective June 17, 2013. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Assistant Medical Center Director at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. She has over 20 years of experience with the Department of Veterans Affairs. She earned a Master’s of Science Degree in Nursing Administration from the University of Alabama In Huntsville and her Doctorate from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her numerous leadership and development accomplishments include the VA Nurses Executive Leadership Program. Currently, Dr. Cleveland serves as the clinical lead for the VISN on Transformation of Care initiatives and she is a member of several workgroups within the VISN and nationally. Dr. Cleveland is collaborating with other Nurse Executives around the country to develop tools to enhance the role of the Clinical Nurse Leader within the VA.

Doreen C. Harper, PhD, RN
Dean and Fay B. Ireland Endowed Chair

Doreen Harper, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Dean and Fay B. Ireland Endowed Chair in Nursing, and Director of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for International Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing. Dean Harper has led the top tier UAB School of Nursing in the development of new educational, practice and research opportunities, including the partnership with UAB Hospital and Health System, and Children’s of Alabama, Veterans Affairs Nursing Academic Partnership for undergraduate and graduate education and research programs in cardiovascular, oncology, occupational and palliative care, as well as, patient safety and quality research. Dr. Harper is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, and the recipient of numerous national and distinguished awards for her scholarly contributions in nursing education and health workforce research.

Cynthia S. Selleck, PhD, RN
Associate Dean for Clinical and Global Partnerships

Dr. Cynthia Selleck is Associate Dean for Clinical and Global partnerships at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Selleck’s career has centered on primary care and developing the workforce to meet the needs of our most diverse and underserved populations. She has led 45 grant funded projects to expand the number of health professionals who provide primary care, particularly in rural and inner-city underserved areas. Her deep commitment to diversity, the elimination of health disparities, and care of medically needy populations has led to the creation of innovative interprofessional programs at the local, state and national levels. Dr. Selleck’s research/clinical/teaching expertise and interest include primary care and chronic disease management, including the importance of tobacco cessation treatment, interprofessional education, health disparities, medically underserved and vulnerable populations, social justice issues, and Veteran's health and Veteran's issues.
