End of the Year Push: Supporting COVID-19 and Funding Request on Capitol Hill
As we near the end of the 116th Congress, AACN made another Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 funding and COVID-19 legislative push. This included:
- On November 20, AACN sent a letter to House and Senate appropriators outlining our funding requests for FY 2021, including:
At least $269.972 million for Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development programs as recommended by the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations and approved by the U.S. House of Representatives for FY 2021; and
At least $177.976 million for the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR, National Institutes of Health) from within the overall NIH funding level as recommended by the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations for FY 2021.
- On November 20, AACN sent another letter to Congressional Leadership reinforcing our COVID-19 legislative relief priorities, including:

Funding Opportunities Available for Schools of Nursing
As we look ahead to the New Year, below are grant opportunities available to schools of nursing, including:
Nursing Workforce Diversity (NWD) Program: Applications for the NWD program for FY 2021 are now open. Administered by the Health Services and Resources Administration (HRSA), the NWD program works to increase educational opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities, underrepresented within the profession. The deadline to apply for NWD grants is January 19, 2021; to learn more about eligibility, click here.
- Advanced Nursing Education - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (ANE-SANE) Program: Applications for HRSA’s ANE-SANE Program for FY 2021 are now being accepted. The ANE-SANE program funds advanced nursing education to train and certify Registered Nurses, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, and Forensic Nurses to practice as sexual assault nurse examiners in rural and underserved communities. Applications are due by February 17, 2021 with schools of nursing, nursing centers, and rural health clinics among the eligible applicants encourage to apply. For more information, click here.
- Department of Education New Funding Opportunity for Migrant Workers: The Department of Education released a call for applications for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). CAMP strives to assist migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their immediate family who are enrolled, or are admitted for enrollment, on a full-time basis at an institution of higher education. This opportunity aims to help students complete their first academic year. The deadline to apply for one of these grants is January 22, 2021. To learn more about this opportunity, click here.
