Unpacking the Current Leadership Context
Academic nursing faculty have always been immersed in complex and challenging settings. However, the unprecedented difficulties of the past several years have left leaders depleted and traversing environments that feel unsustainable. To launch our 1.5 day journey together, we will anchor the work in shared experiences from the current context. Building a community of diverse travelers is the first stop along the way to choosing a leadership adventure and customizing it to fit each participant’s individual needs.

Charting a Course: Leadership with Purpose
Leveraging shared contextual clarity as a foundation, participants will shift their focus to uncovering the driving forces that currently define their leadership journey. Through reflection and guided inquiry each participant will then craft an inventory of personal beliefs and values that are best aligned with their aspirations. Identifying a “North Star” will enable participants to establish a leadership trajectory for the future and develop opportunities to lead with more intention and purpose.

Design Your Adventure Part 1: Inspiration
Working in community and leveraging their North Star as a guide, participants will shift gears to begin customizing their toolkit of strategies and resources to amplify their ability to lead with purpose. To build this capacity right in the session each person will have the opportunity to define and prioritize one critical leadership challenge to practice navigating using the framework of Design Thinking. Design Thinking is a process and approach that combines analytical and intuitive reasoning to tackle any multifaceted challenge with no clear solution. At its core, it focuses leaders on unique human-centered perspectives and priorities to better engage a world defined by interconnectivity and complexity and to drive more innovative solutions. In Part 1 of the adventure, each participant will employ the first three elements of a design challenge including 1) Framing a Question, 2) Gathering Inspiration, and 3) Insightful Sense-Making.

Design Your Adventure Part 2: Ideation
Once a leadership question is clarified and participants have synthesized insights, they will formulate an area of focus and brainstorm breakthrough ideas to apply to their challenge. This work will set them up for success in the final Design Thinking phase of Implementation. The key elements of this stage are 1) Collaborative Brainstorming and 2) Journey Mapping.

Design Your Adventure Part 3: Implementation, Testing to Learn, and Pausing to Refuel
The final step in participant’s leadership design challenge will be to recheck the location of the North Star and determine what is needed to implement tangible solutions that can be tested in their real world. In community with workshop traveling companions this phase introduces the concept of how to experiment with prototypes to maximize learning. Prototypes are not meant to be fully formed solutions for the leadership challenge, but tools to iterate ideas in real time that will enhance skills in leading with purpose. By the end of the session, each participant will have a customized adventure travel guide in hand to use as a roadmap for applying new intentional skills and tackling at least one priority leadership challenge. No travel guild would be complete of course without also including rest stops and resources along the way. As the adventure comes to a close participants will reflect and solidify ways to refuel and support each other while leading with purpose.
