Dawn Mueller-Burke, PhD, CRNP, NNP-BC

Dr. Mueller-Burke has a clinical focus in the Neonatal Intensive Care arena where she spent most of her career as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) PhD program with a focus in neonatal neurophysiology. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in a developmental genetics laboratory with a focus in stem cell biology. Her research sought to better understand neonatal brain injury and to identify potential interventions, including hypothermia and stem cell therapy to improve outcomes after neonatal brain injury. She shifted her focus to leadership and educational-based endeavors once joining the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 2004 where she teaches across degree programs, specifically in the NNP program. She is nationally certified as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, with a per diem practice in the NICU at the University of Maryland Medical Center. In 2011 she served as the Faculty Chair of the DNP Transition Task Force incorporating the AACN Essentials, leading all the APN Master’s specialties at UMSON to the doctorate (DNP) beginning Fall 2014. She is currently the Chair of the New Essentials Curricular Revisions Taskforce at UMSON, with a targeted implementation of the graduate programs in the Fall of 2024.

Marta Okoniewski, MPA, is the Director of Student Engagement at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). She led the development and launch of the GNSA, a national network providing high value programs, services, and resources to nursing students enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs. Prior to joining AACN, Ms. Okoniewski worked as the Program Coordinator at New York University College of Nursing within the Academic and Clinical Affairs department. She received her master’s in public administration from New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Scranton.

Emerson Ea

Dr. Emerson Ea is the associate dean and a clinical associate professor at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing. His scholarship interest areas include nursing education and innovation, immigrant health and well-being, and cardiovascular health. He has published on topics related to work and personal outcomes among internationally educated nurses, Filipino immigrant health, gerontologic nursing, and nursing education and practice. Dr. Ea was part of the inaugural cohort of the American Academy of Nursing Jonas Policy Scholars, working with the Cultural Competence and Health Equity Expert Panel (2014–2016).

Dr. Ea is chair of the Kalusugan Coalition, a community organization that aims to promote cardiovascular health among Filipino Americans in the New York metropolitan area, and chair of the Education Committee of the Philippine Nurses Association of America.

Dr. Ea earned a PhD in nursing from Duquesne University, DNP from Case Western Reserve University, MS in adult health from Long Island University, and BSN from the University of St. La Salle, Philippines.

Karyn L. Boyar, DNP, FNP-BC, RN, CNE

Karyn Boyar is an assistant clinical professor at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing, the director for the Master in Clinical Nursing Research Program as well as a Certified Nurse Educator. As an educator and family nurse practitioner specializing in neurology and long-term care, she teaches both didactic and clinical courses and simulation. She has over 20 years of experience in healthcare and over ten years of experience in the clinical care and management of patients with Parkinson’s disease and Dystonia.

Before joining the faculty at NYU, Boyar was the cli nical specialty coordinator at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the designated outreach coordinator for the National Parkinson Center of Excellence at the Robert and John M. Benheim Center for Movement Disorders.

Boyar earned her DNP from Pace University and MS and BS in nursing science from Pace University. Currently, she serves on the board of directors of the IARCN (International Association of Clinical Research Nurses) as a member-at-large.

Her current scholarship focuses on bringing Design Thinking Models to life for undergraduate students in the large classroom. She has presented her work on Design Thinking on the local, national and international levels and has contributed several book chapters disseminating this innovation in teaching.

Mary Jo Vetter, DNP, RN, AGPCNP-BC, FAANP

Mary Jo Vetter is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the DNP Program at NYU Meyers College of Nursing. She engages in clinical practice as the founder of VetterAPN Consulting promoting clinical and care management strategies to support successful aging in place. Dr. Vetter has expertise in evidence-based quality improvement, establishing cutting-edge NP led, primary care services in the community, and virtual care delivery. She has a proven track record of innovation in practice and education that focuses on promoting the nurse practitioner as leader. She has received awards and accolades for her contributions to clinical academic partnerships, advancing and leading the profession, and transforming advanced practice nursing.

Stacen Keating, PhD, RN

Stacen A. Keating is a Clinical Associate Professor at NYU's Rory Meyers College of Nursing. Dr. Keating teaches across programs in both the undergraduate, graduate and doctor al departments (DNP). She has established competencies in Instructional Design as well as Design Thinking (DT). Design Thinking is a means of teaching nurses a framework of creative thinking and innovation and has established a process for utilizing this framework within her public health classes. Her areas of scholarship interest are further focused on global public health. She has written numerous publications related to both educator and student needs. A key focus has been to assist nurse educators and students attain access to the most evidenced based resources to achieve excellence within professional nursing practice. Dr. Keating is on the Nursing Advisory Board for Nurses International, a 501c3 organization devoted to providing excellence in global nursing education, especially in countries with limited resources. Dr. Keating has developed educational products in collaboration with colleagues at Nurses International which are open access resources and are readily available at Nurses international's main website. Key courses relate to: oncology nursing, fundamentals of nursing and medical surgical nursing. Additional courses taught at NYU include: Community/Public Health Nursing (UG), Applied Epidemiology (DNP), Environment and the Health of Populations (G) and Psych Nursing (UG, simulation).

Nelda Godfrey is Professor and Associate Dean for Innovative Partnerships and Practice at the University of Kansas School of Nursing, Kansas City, Kansas. A scholar in the areas of clinical ethics, leadership, and breakthrough thinking in nursing education, Dr. Godfrey has been influential in expanding how nurses understand professional identity formation—a concept prevalent in other health professions and STEM disciplines for more than two decades. Dr. Godfrey will help novice educators understand the importance of professional identity formation and how it is different for nursing vs other disciplines, and then share how to apply these unfamiliar terms and domains in fostering student nurses’ professional development.

Dr. Tammy Cupit has been a registered nurse for over 25 years. She currently serves as an Associate Chief Wellness Officer for UTMB Health, directs the Nursing Science & Innovation division, and has faculty appointments with the UTMB School of Nursing as well as the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Her background is primarily in Behavioral Health nursing. She received her PhD from the UTMB School of Nursing and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. She is a certified Instructor in Communication and Crisis De-escalation from the Crisis Prevention Institute. Dr. Cupit also holds certifications in Emotional and Social Intelligence Coaching from the Institute for Social and Emotional Intelligence and is a certified specialist in Restorative Practices from the National Educators for Restorative Practices (NEDRP). She has conducted local and multi-site social and behavioral research and has spoken regionally, nationally, and internationally on her work. Dr. Cupit works with educators, students, healthcare teams, and individuals to optimize well-being and joy and to improve professional relationships.

Debbie Rickeard, DNP, MSN, BScN, BA, RN, CNE, CCRN
Experiential Learning Specialist

Debbie Rickeard is an Experiential Learning Specialist and faculty member at the University of Windsor, Faculty of Nursing. She has a diverse clinical background in the areas of critical care, heart failure, cardiac transplant, and medical surgical nursing. Aside from almost 40 years of clinical practice, Debbie Rickeard has been a clinical educator and faculty at both the university and college levels. Content areas taught include medical-surgical classes in the second and third year of the program, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and a fourth-year transition into practice class. Along with theory classes, Debbie is co-manager of the simulation lab. Scenarios are developed for each year of the undergraduate program as well as the graduate level and in collaboration with the School of Medicine.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Debbie developed and presented a virtual national workshop through the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing on Building Practice Competencies Virtually Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students. During the three sessions of the workshop, presentation participants learned how to select virtual simulation modalities to develop practice competencies among their students, including clinical reasoning, clinical judgment, relational abilities, and technical and procedural skills. Through funding from the Ontario government, Debbie was instrumental in developing virtual simulation games (VSGs) for the nurse practitioner programs. The development of the VSGs and the pivoting from face-to-face simulation have been presented at research conferences through the University of Windsor.

Beth Culross, PhD, RN

Dr. Culross has been a nursing educator at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing since 2008. She has been involved in simulation since 2004, starting in a role as a Clinical Nurse Specialist using simulation for staff development and training. Dr. Culross has received a Dean’s grant to develop simulation for the UNMC College of Nursing and has presented this work at a national conference. In 2017, Dr. Culross became the Director of the Learning Resource Center for the College of Nursing and was responsible for oversight skills and simulation of the five campuses of the College of Nursing. This includes maintaining the INACSL standards of simulation. Dr. Culross has earned a Certificate in Health Simulation Education from the Bryan Health College in Lincoln, NE, and her Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator certification from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. As an active member of both INACSL and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, Dr. Culross is the chair of the education committee for INACSL and conference abstract reviewer for SSH. Dr. Culross is working on expanding the simulation opportunities for students at UNMC through virtual reality.

Sue Schuelke, PhD, RN
University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing

Sue is a passionate nurse educator and researcher with experience developing educational strategies to enhance learning and clinical judgment. Her research has focused on clinical judgment, models of care delivery, transition to practice, and the innovation of IVR. Dr. Schuelke has worked with the University Computer Science and Engineering College and IVR companies to develop virtual reality scenarios and games. She has worked with a team to incorporate IVR into the CON curriculum, evaluating IVR in relation to learning, engagement, and immersion. She has submitted the findings of her work for publication and has presented regionally and nationally on IVR. Sue has worked on both the practice and academic side of education and is skilled in bridging the gap between the practice and academic worlds. Dr. Schuelke strives to use technology to enhance nursing education.

Therese S. Richmond, PhD, RN, FAAN

Dr. Richmond is passionate about using nursing science to prevent injury and violence and improve outcomes, particularly in patients from vulnerable urban populations worldwide – those who live on the margins of society, have limited resources, or live in pervasively violent communities. An early clinical position in a Washington, DC trauma ICU and resuscitation unit sparked Dr. Richmond’s interest in preventing injuries and her curiosity about survivors’ quality of life. This experience led to specialization in nursing care for victims of injury and violence, including co-founding the Firearm & Injury Center at Penn two decades ago and which now is a vibrant interdisciplinary research center: the Penn Injury Science Center.

Jacquelyn Campbell, PhD, MSN, RN, FAAN

Dr. Campbell is a national leader in research and advocacy in the field of domestic and intimate partner violence. She has authored or co-authored more than 230 publications and seven books on violence and health outcomes. Her studies paved the way for a growing body of interdisciplinary investigations by researchers in the disciplines of nursing, medicine, and public health. Her expertise is frequently sought by national and international policy makers in exploring IPV and its health effects on families and communities. As a nurse educator and mentor, Dr. Campbell leads by example in inspiring new generations of nurse researchers. Her BSN, MSN, and PhD are from Duke University, Wright State University, and the University of Rochester. She teaches an undergraduate and MSN elective in Family Violence as well as in the PhD program and is the PI of an NIH-funded (T32) fellowship that provides funding for pre- and postdoctoral fellows in violence research.

Elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2000, Dr. Campbell also was the Institute of Medicine/American Academy of Nursing/American Nurses' Foundation Senior Scholar in Residence and was founding co-chair of the IOM Forum on the Prevention of Global Violence. Other honors include the Pathfinder Distinguished Researcher by the Friends of the National Institute of Health National Institute for Nursing Research, Outstanding Alumna and Distinguished Contributions to Nursing Science Awards, Duke University School of Nursing, the American Society of Criminology Vollmer Award, and being named one of the inaugural 17 Gilman Scholars at Johns Hopkins University. She is on the Board of Directors for Futures Without Violence, is an active member of the Johns Hopkins Women’s Health Research Group, and has served on the boards of the House of Ruth Battered Women's Shelter and four other shelters. She was a member of the congressionally appointed U.S. Department of Defense Task Force on Domestic Violence.

Sara Jacoby, PhD, MPH, MSN

Dr. Jacoby combines nursing and public health in her approach to injury science and urban health research. As a nurse in a Philadelphia ICU, Dr. Jacoby was witness to the profound trauma and violence that impacted the lives of hospitalized patients and their families. This inspires her scholarship on the experience of injured people and the socio-structural etiologies of racial and ethnic disparities in trauma, violence, and opportunities for health.

A Senior Scholar at the Penn Injury Science Center, Dr. Jacoby’s research is focused on identifying why injuries occur where they do in urban spaces, the experiences of injured people a s they recover in their homes and communities, and how we might support health systems and urban environments to enhance safety and improve injury outcomes. Her current research focuses on identifying the potential of mobile technology to better elicit patient-reported long-term outcomes after trauma in effort to identify pathways for a stronger continuum of health and social care after hospitalization. Dr. Jacoby’s research is also focused on the social and health consequences of intersections between emergency medical interventions and law enforcement activities in response to violence.

Shalanda A. Bynum, PhD, MPH

National Institute of Nursing Research

Dr. Bynum is a socio-behavioral scientist who joined NINR from the Center for Scientific Review where she served as a Scientific Review Officer in the Division of AIDS, Behavioral and Population Sciences. She oversees a research grant portfolio focused broadly on the social determinants of health and health equity; violence, adversity, trauma; and sexual health.

Prior to her NIH service, Dr. Bynum was an assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Her research program focused on addressing the unequal burden of cancer and other diseases among minority populations. More specifically, her work involved understanding and intervening upon the lived experiences that produce health inequities and perpetuate health disparities. These factors centered on literacy and language, geography, historical mistrust, healthcare system failures, and other social factors.

Dr. Bynum holds a BS in psychology from Florida A&M University and a MPH and PhD in health promotion from the University of South Carolina at Columbia. Dr. Bynum also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in behavioral oncology at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute.

Angela Amar, PhD, RN, FAAN

Dr. Amar joined UNLV School of Nursing as dean in January 2018. She is excited by the university’s top tier initiative and the school of nursing’s amazing students, faculty, and staff. Prior to her current role, Dr. Amar led the undergraduate programs including pre-nursing courses, nursing, and accelerated programs at Emory University. Through her vision and innovation, the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing advanced the learning and leadership among undergraduate students, particularly within forensic nursing and cultural diversity. Her funded projects included an NIH-sponsored Bridges to Baccalaureate Program and an HRSA funded Nursing Workforce Diversity grant.

Prior to joining Emory University, she developed forensic nursing programs for Georgetown University and Boston College and established an educational model for nursing schools nationwide. Her research focuses on sexual assault, dating violence, and mental health responses to traumatic experiences has received support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the National Institute of Nursing Research. She has published papers about dating violence and sexual assault and is active in university service related to violence and diversity.

Dr. Amar dedicates her career to enhancing diversity within nursing leadership and improving care and support for survivors of violence and trauma when they enter the healthcare system. An advanced practice psychiatric nurse, she co-authored an award-winning book on forensic nursing titled A Practical Guide to Forensic Nursing.
