Professional Identity Formation is considered an educational objective in other health disciplines, yet in nursing, many faculty are still unfamiliar with the term or its meaning. In this webinar, faculty will be able to explain and apply professional identity in nursing through definition(s) and iteratively-derived domains, helping students to incorporate identity formation in beginning their journey into the nursing discipline.
Objectives:
- Describe how the concept of professional identity is important in the relationship with other disciplines
- Explain the definition of professional identity in nursing and the relevance/evolution of the four domains: values and ethics, knowledge, nurse as a leader, and professional comportment.
- Discuss the goods for both patients and professional nurses with language and knowledge about professional identity in nursing.

Dr. Beth Culross, 2020 recipient of AACN’s Foundation for Academic Nursing Faculty Scholars Grant Program, will describe the development and implementation of Immersive Virtual Reality Simulations into a BSN program. Dr. Culross will describe integrated simulations for traditional and accelerated programs and findings from the first year of implementation. In addition, steps to development, including cost, faculty and student development, outcome measures, and space consideration, will be reviewed.

- Define the need for innovative immersive virtual reality simulation for students.
- Discuss the development, implementation, and findings of a new immersive virtual reality simulation program.
- Demonstrate the considerations for developing and implementing an immersive virtual reality program.

Partnerships Between Academic Health Departments and Schools of Nursing

This webinar will provide a brief overview of the concept of an Academic Health Department (ADH) and its roles and functions. This will be followed by presenters from AHDs and Schools of Nursing (SON) partnerships, describing how partnerships facilitate both nursing education and health department goals of improving the health of the public. Presenters will share examples of student experiences, challenges encountered and how to overcome them when working in partnership with an AHD, and possible ways to measure outcomes for student learning and health department goals. The AHD/SON partnership is an important mechanism for helping nursing students acquire public/population health knowledge and skills.
Objectives:
- Define Academic Health Department.
- Identify three benefits of SON partnerships with AHDs for the health department and nursing students.
- Describe challenges in implementing AHD/SON partnerships, and potential ways to overcome these.
- List three potential measures of outcomes of AHD/SON partnerships for the nursing students and AHD.

Transforming Nursing Education Through Curriculum Innovation

Indiana University (IU) School of Nursing administrators Dr. Robin Newhouse and Dr. Rebecca Bartlett Ellis outline IU’s faculty-led curriculum transformation process using the Essentials framework. The process focuses on curriculum mapping for alignment of the Essentials to courses, course competencies, and program outcomes, as well as assessment strategies to evaluate student learning outcomes consistent with course competencies. Faculty are engaged through faculty governance committees, embracing opportunities to develop curricula that supports student success and teaching/learning excellence.
