  There has long been a debate on the appropriate balance in preparing nurses for hospital versus community-based care. Why has making this shift been so difficult? Even in the face of positive community-based outcomes such as an improved patient and family experience, and a reduction in cost, most schools of nursing still focus on the provision of care in tertiary care centers. A graduate of Howard University, Dr. Mitchell is board certified in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology, a Fellow with the National Association of Medical Examiners, and is the Chief Medical Examiner for Washington, DC. In this role, he is uniquely positioned to understand the social determinants of health that lead to violence or an early death affecting most communities. He has a keen interest in public health issues. He has dedicated his life to the service of others both personally and professionally; his position in the Medical Examiner’s Office allows him to do just that.

One of the biggest challenges with assessment data is making sense of it and acting on it. How do we know when results are outstanding or concerning? As nursing faculty and administrators, we have to be able to understand and communicate our program outcomes based on data we collect and analyze. In this session, Dr. Kathryn Tart of the University of Houston discusses how they are using national benchmarking assessments of graduating seniors, alumni, and employers to support accreditation efforts, benchmark against peer institutions, and drive improvements to their nursing programs. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for increasing response rates and making the most of benchmarking data on their respective campuses.

Moral Courage: Doing the Right Thing in the Face of Your Fears*
Professional integrity requires personal integrity—Wholeness. Irshad Manji knows what it is both to have it and to lose it. In this presentation, she shares the story of neglecting her mental and physical well-being as she ardently sought to save her faith of Islam from future terrorism. The near-fatal result taught her the dangers of teaching integrity without living it. As a founder of the Moral Courage Project, Manji will apply her hard-won lessons to academic nursing, whose own health is critical to the health of graduating practitioners and patients alike.

John P. McGovern Lectureship Award
The Whole World is Watching*
Presented in honor of Dr. John P. McGovern for his noted clinical practice and research, AACN is proud to announce that this year’s award recipient is Lt. General Patricia Horoho, USA, Retired. As the first woman and the first nurse to hold the position of Army Surgeon General, Ms. Horoho has commanded the US Army Medical Command-which provided healthcare services to 3.9 million active and retired military personnel and their families. She was also the first nurse and woman to serve as the commander of the Walter Reed Health Care System. Amazingly enough, she was in the Pentagon when it was hit by terrorists on 9/11 and led efforts at the impact site to triage victims even when being directed to find cover by the FBI.

Moral Resiliency: Leading with Integrity*
In 2014, Dr. Rushton co-led the first National Nursing Ethics Summit that created an agenda for 21st Century Nursing Ethics. Dr. Rushton is currently designing, implementing and evaluating the Mindful Ethical Practice and Resilience Academy (MEPRA) to build moral resilience in frontline nurses. She has identified innovative methods to cultivate moral resilience and design a culture in health care that supports ethical practice. Strategies to promote resilience while maintaining one’s integrity will be presented.

CCNE Forum: Driving Program Quality and Effectiveness Through Accreditation: Introducing the Revised CCNE Standards for Accreditation of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Programs*
The 2018 revision of accreditation standards brings new opportunities for engagement and enhanced understanding of expectations regarding program quality and effectiveness. What has remained the same in the standards and what has changed? How might the changes impact nursing programs at the baccalaureate and graduate levels? When do the revised standards go into effect? What assistance and resources are available to program administrators and faculty during the transition to the revised standards?
