CNL Summit

The CNL Summit provides a national forum for all healthcare and academic audiences currently implementing or interested in exploring CNL education and practice. Conference topics generally include the impact and value of the CNL role on improving patient outcomes, implementing and sustaining the CNL role across diverse systems of care, the CNL role in quality and safety initiatives, innovations in education, and the complementary relationship between the CNL and other members of the healthcare team, including nurse managers, APRNs, and physicians. In addition to plenary sessions, concurrent, abstract, and poster presentations allow participants to choose topics of interest in a smaller forum. Special forums for CNL faculty and nursing/healthcare executives also are offered.
The Summit features the CNL Research Symposium, a pre-conference workshop hosted by the Commission on Nurse Certification that focuses on the CNL’s role in data collection and evaluation for reporting clinical outcomes. (Separate registration required.)

Moving Beyond the Microsystem
Our speakers started their CNL journey in 2010 working in the ICU and Palliative Care. In the last eight years, they have applied CNL competencies to model design for complex populations in a healthcare system, in a FQHC, in a city ecosystem, and on the national level. Their current work involves co-designing complex care models in multiple settings and contributing to the development of the field of Complex Care. In this session, you will learn about the limitless potential of the CNL role to spark healthcare transformation and the ways you can apply your education to impact systems and populations.

Designing Health Care Around the CNL: Innovation to Reality
When opening a new hospital as part of the Texas Health Resources system, the leadership team took advantage of the opportunity to design from the ground up a care delivery model around the CNL. This interdisciplinary leadership team will share how this innovative approach to care was shaped, how it is working, and the impact it is having on care outcomes, patient experiences, and staff satisfaction.

- Discovering Evidence to Change Practice & Improve Care Outcomes
Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNLs) are tasked with information and outcomes management as part of their practice. This presentation provides an overview of how CNLs use information systems and technology, appraisal tools for evaluating evidence, reference management software for collection and organization of information sources, and how evidence guides CNL outcomes contributing to systems efficiency and larger data sets.

Back by popular demand! This session will focus on the application of practice data, analyses, and presentations using tables and graphs to build a business case for the CNL and practice innovations.
Speaker: Brian Collins, Director, Decision Support, Lawrence General Hospital - Identifying the Problem and Workable Solutions for your Microsystem
Finding potential solutions to improve outcomes of care is a key component of CNL practice. However, doing a deep dive into identifying the problem and what makes your microsystem unique are critical first steps to identifying and implementing possible solutions. Frequently these actions are reversed or skipped completely. Hear what tools and strategies the speaker uses, and how you can implement these in your setting to achieve quality outcomes.

In this session, participants will learn how to examine the elements needed in project development to support publication and dissemination. This result can be achieved by exploring data, methods, and types of IRB applications needed for publication and dissemination.

Earning the CNL credential reflects a deep personal commitment and sense of accountability, inspiring credibility and confidence in a CNL’s professional knowledge. This session will include an overview of the CNL certification exam, as well as its administration and development. Participants also will learn effective methods for reviewing and preparing for the exam.

This interactive session will describe recent scholarly work to map CNL competencies across AACN and CNC policy documents. The product is a cohesive CNL competency framework that aligns across the education-to-practice trajectory. Participants will be asked to provide feedback on the framework and engage in discussion about the framework’s potential utility in guiding CNL curriculum and/or implementing and evaluating CNL practice roles.

Innovations in Health Care: Preparing Nurses to Think like Detectives, Inventors, and Entrepreneurs
Today’s clinical practice brings with it challenges for clinicians and the educators responsible for preparing tomorrow’s workforce. Identifying opportunities to leverage new technologies in practice has tremendous potential for improving healthcare outcomes. This session will explore the use of smart technologies and other innovations in health care and the roles nurses can play in identifying and implementing new technologies and reinventing “old” technologies. As nurses continue to be on the front lines of the care continuum, their experience and expertise is critical in designing and improving care. Clinicians and educators must ensure that nursing leaders are empowered to develop and implement changes to streamline the patient pathway and improve outcomes.

Substitution, Cancellation, and Refund Policies
CNL Research Symposium
If you subsequently cannot attend this event, the following options are available:
1. You may substitute your registration to another individual within your organization. This must be done by contacting the AACN Conference Department via email at conferences@aacnnursing.org.
2. If a substitution is not possible, your cancellation request must be received in writing and confirmed by AACN; otherwise, it cannot be honored. The following refund arrangements will then apply:
a. Cancellation requests received by February 6, 2019 will be refunded minus a $150 non-refundable administrative fee.
b. Cancellation requests received after February 6, 2019 will not be granted any refunds.
c. Refunds will not be given for no-shows.
d. No-show registrations with an open balance will be charged a $150 non-refundable administrative fee after the event.
Please note: Cancellations received fewer than 7 days prior to the conference start date will be reviewed and processed within two weeks after the last day of the conference.
