National Provider Identifiers Webinar
Webinar Description
The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a 10-digit unique identifier that allows for a standardized method for providers to identify themselves in the healthcare system to improve effectiveness and efficiency of electronic transmission of health information. Though early adoption of the NPI has occurred, many nurse educators and by extension nursing students have little awareness of NPIs and why this matters. A unique national identifier for all nurses has significant implications for policy research and in the application of big data science. Consistent with the 2018-2019 National Action Plan of the Nursing Knowledge: 2018 Big Data Science conference, adoption strategies across nursing education, research, practice and policy are needed.
Objectives:
- Describe three ways national identifiers are applicable to nursing.
- Compare and contrast application implications of NPIs in nursing.
- Discuss adoption strategies for the NPI, addressing education, practice, research, and policy implications.
