Impact Summit Featuring Lessons Learned from HRSA Grantee Schools of Nursing
Advancing Nursing Workforce Diversity
Explore evidence-based strategies for increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in schools of nursing from faculty and nurse leaders as they describe the impact and learned outcomes following the implementation of a 4-year grant funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
Thirty-two unique nursing schools will describe the opportunities, challenges, and benefits of implementing holistic admissions review process, academic innovations, and a climate and culture assessment of their learning environments.
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the impact of implementing evidence-based strategies for increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in nursing schools.
- Address challenges and facilitators when introducing changes to the admissions review process for nursing schools.
- Synthesize the necessary components for creating inclusive excellence in learning environments.
- Assess the potential benefits of innovations presented by participants in AACN’s Diversity Leadership Institute who are seeking to implement their capstone projects at their nursing schools.

Some Plants Thrive in Sandy Soil: Affirming the Value of Investments in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Professional Nursing
Dr. Brooks Carthon’s research and teaching have long focused on the issues of marginalization and inequities in health care. It is well understood that inequities in health care are avoidable, unjust, and the result of policies and practices that create unequal distribution of resources to minority and poor communities.
Most recently, research by Dr. Brooks Carthon’s team addresses the disproportionate risk borne by low-income individuals with multiple chronic conditions who are transitioning to home from acute care settings. While social conditions such as inadequate housing and food insecurity impact post hospitalization recovery, so too does poor care coordination and a lack of communication between inpatient and community-based providers.

Gwen E. Garrison is the director of the education evaluation and data analysis program and associate professor in the School of Educational Studies at Claremont Graduate University. She is an applied research and data strategist with over 25 years of experience in K-12, higher education institutions, and Washington DC nonprofit associations and think tanks. Dr. Garrison helps leverage organizational data assets through research, data visualization technology, and data governance so that these assets contribute to critical policy and operational decisions. She has managed large data systems for over 2.5 million records and 10,000 variables with high ethical standards for privacy and security. Dr. Garrison has authored over 55 association and academic level publications and presentations.

Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
Tara Spencer is Chief of the Nursing Education and Practice Branch in the Division of Nursing and Public Health (DNPH) at HRSA. She provides strategic oversight for a $60M investment focused on developing and increasing the nursing workforce through two areas - Nursing Workforce Diversity and Nurse, Education, Practice, Quality and Retention. These programs aim to increase the supply, distribution, and preparation of a diverse nursing workforce to deliver quality care in community-based settings to rural and underserved populations. Tara has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Hampton University, and Master of Science in Nursing from Stevenson University.
