Nursing faculty, academic leaders, and staff play a critical role in preparing the future nursing workforce while advancing excellence in education, scholarship, and practice. As colleges and schools of nursing navigate evolving educational demands, workforce challenges, and increasing responsibilities, there is growing recognition of the importance of creating environments that support faculty well-being, engagement, and professional fulfillment. Investing in organizational well-being not only strengthens recruitment and retention but also enhances the learning environment and positively influences the professional formation of future nurses.
This interactive panel discussion will introduce participants to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Well-Being Excellence™ Credential and its application within nursing education. Attendees will learn how the credential provides a framework for creating healthy academic workplaces that prioritize psychological safety, resilience, engagement, and professional fulfillment. Expert panelists, including representatives from ANCC and leaders from credentialed organizations, will share practical strategies, lessons learned, outcomes achieved, and recommendations for implementation. Participants will leave with a roadmap for advancing faculty well-being, reducing burnout, strengthening workforce retention, and modeling healthy professional practices for nursing students.
Outcomes:
- Describe the purpose, standards, and requirements of the ANCC Well-Being Excellence™ Credential and its relevance to nursing education.
- Examine the relationship between faculty, staff and student well-being, burnout prevention, workforce sustainability, student outcomes, and professional role modeling within academic nursing environments.
- Identify actionable strategies and organizational practices that can help colleges and schools of nursing prepare for and achieve Well-Being Excellence™ recognition.
Speakers
Lori Brodie, DNP, PhD, APRN, PMHNP-BC, CNE
Associate Vice President, Nursing Education Excellence
Galen College of Nursing
Dr. Lori Brodie is the AVP of Nursing Education Excellence and has been with Galen College of Nursing since 2017. Dr. Brodie developed Galen’s iCare Compassionately model, which has been published in multiple journal articles. Dr. Brodie taught in the Arts and Sciences, prelicensure, and post-licensure programs. She is also an ANCC board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Brodie holds a DNP and a PhD in Psychology, is a certified nurse educator, and is a certified personal trainer and health coach. Dr. Brodie lives on Amelia Island in Florida with her husband who is a retired submariner after serving 30 years in the US Navy. They have two sons, two daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren. Her hobbies include being a fitness enthusiast and enjoying spending quality time with her family, especially at the beach.
Kate Gawlik, DNP, RN, APRN-CNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN

Dr. Kate Gawlik is a Clinical Professor, Director of Health and Wellness Academic Programming, and Project Manager for the Million Hearts® initiative at The Ohio State University. She is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate nursing courses and serves as a clinical preceptor for advanced practice nursing students. Her clinical interests and expertise include population health, cardiovascular prevention, parental burnout, health sciences education, and clinician and student wellness. She is a commissioner for the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Pathway to Excellence and Wellbeing Excellence credential. She is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the National Academies of Practice, and the American Academy of Nursing.

Dr. Patricia McGaffigan is Senior Advisor, Safety and President, Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety at the IHI, where she serves as co-chair of the National Steering Committee for Patient Safety and liaison to IHI’s Lucian’s Leape Institute and IHI’s patient and workforce safety and well-being, healthcare transformation, and nursing initiatives. She is Well-being Commissioner for ANCC’s Pathway to Excellence, a board member of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, the Foundation to Advance Nursing in Massachusetts, and the I-PASS Institute, and a member of Planetree’s Person-Centered Certification Committee. She received the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Lifetime Member Award, the 2023 University of North Texas Health Science Center’s Mary E. Luibel Distinguished Service Award and was named to the 2026, 2025, 2024 and 2023 Becker’s Review List of Patient Safety Experts to Know. Patricia’s prior experience includes clinical practice, teaching, and progressive leadership roles in start-up and established medical device and technology companies with a focus on patient safety. Patricia received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing from Boston College and Boston University.
Rebecca Graystone, PhD, MBA, MS, RN, NE-BC

Rebecca Graystone is the Senior Vice President, Accreditation & Organization Credentialing at the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In her role, Rebecca has responsibility for the overall strategic growth, direction, and operations of ANCC’s accreditation and organization credentialing programs and teams.
Rebecca is a registered nurse and has 33 years of acute care nursing practice and leadership experience primarily in the Washington, D.C. region. She has written and presented extensively both domestically and internationally on nursing excellence topics. Rebecca is a doctorally-prepared nurse with a PhD in Health Services. Additionally, she has a Masters of Science in Health Care Administration and Masters in Business Administration, both from the University of Maryland, University College. She has a certificate in Health Care Management from Georgetown University and is ANCC board certified as a Nurse Executive.
