A prevalent trend in higher education, including nursing education, is the conceptual approach. This presentation will highlight origins of the trend and review essential steps associated with developing a concept-based curriculum for nursing.

Jean Giddens, PhD, RN, FAAN
Dean and Professor, RWJF Nurse Executive Fellow
Virginia Commonwealth University

Jean Giddens is Dean and Professor at the School of Nursing, Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, and is a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow, 2011 Cohort.  Dr. Giddens earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Kansas, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso, and a doctorate in Education and Human Resource Studies from Colorado State University.  Dr. Giddens teaching experience includes associate degree, baccalaureate degree, and graduate degree programs in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, and Virginia. She is an expert in concept-based curriculum development and evaluation as well as innovative strategies for teaching and learning.   Dr. Giddens is the author of multiple journal articles, nursing textbooks, and electronic media and serves as an education consultant to nursing programs throughout the country.
