Ann Deerhake, MS, RN, CNL, CCRN
St. Rita’s Medical Center and The Ohio State University

Since 1991, Ann has been a critical care nurse at St. Rita’s Medical Center, a Level II Trauma Center in Lima, OH. Her love of caring for critically ill patients in the medical-surgical-neurological ICU began in 1997 and she continued on to become a Critical Care Clinical Resource Nurse for the nightshift nursing staff in 2006. As one of the leaders of the Rapid Response and Code Blue teams, Ann continually found gaps in processes that led to decreased patient safety and suboptimal outcomes. While completing her BSN at Ohio Northern University in 2007, she discovered the Clinical Nurse Leader role and was thrilled at the prospect of furthering her education in preparation to remain at the bedside while improving the quality of care. After receiving her MS in Nursing from The Ohio State University, as well as her Clinical Nurse Leader certification, Ann advocated for the CNL role, obtaining the initial Clinical Nurse Leader position at St. Rita’s Medical Center. While in this role she has focused on education, developing an Open Heart Practicum for care of the immediate out of surgery open heart patient, an annual ICU competency day, and progressive care educational boot camps. Ann has collaborated with many transdisciplinary teams to improve quality, working on such initiatives as reducing pressure ulcer and nosocomial infection, increasing staff and patient satisfaction, and encouraging professional development of frontline nursing staff. In 2012, she became an Epic credentialed trainer and was integral in the system implementation, becoming a critical care clinical documentation resource for St. Rita’s and Catholic Health Partners. Ann also serves as part-time faculty for the graduate nursing program at The Ohio State university, teaching Health Promotion and Transition to CNL Practice.
