Mastery Learning Through Deliberate Practice in Nursing Education
This webinar will introduce the learner to the latest concepts of deliberate practice and mastery learning for clinical skills. Setting cut scores for these skills using a patient safety approach to mastery standards is explained along with imaginative ways to increase the contextualization of skills for learners.

Dr. Suzan (Suzie) Kardong-Edgren is a professor and Director of the Regional Research and Innovation in Simulation Education (RISE) Center at Robert Morris University in Moon Township, PA. Dr. Edgren is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Simulation in Nursing, the flagship journal for the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL). She serves as the Vice President for Research for the INACSL. Dr. Edgren was awarded the Spirit of Leadership in Simulation by the INACSL, the Excellence in Educational Research award by the National League for Nursing (NLN), and the Debra Spunt Endowed Lectureship in simulation by the NLN in 2010. Dr. Edgren also teaches in the MS in Medical Simulation program at the Drexel College of Medicine.
Laura Gonzalez, PhD, ARNP

Dr. González is Assistant Professor and Simulation Coordinator at the University of Central Florida. She serves on the Board of Directors at INACSL, as Vice President for Programs. Dr. Gonzalez has been in academia for over 14 years. Dr. Gonzalez is certified in healthcare simulation education (CHSE) and National League of Nursing (NLN) Simulation Leader. She has lectured internationally most recently in Madrid. Her areas of interest include the use of simulation in nursing education, the transfer of knowledge to the clinical setting, and mastery learning with deliberate practice in nursing. She recently completed a grant from Florida Blue for her project entitled: Bridging the gap: Integration of high fidelity simulation in nursing curricula to increase transfer of knowledge and skills to the workforce. She is published in the area of skill acquisition and virtual patients and continues to pursue this area of interest.
