Student-led Programs: Opportunities for IPE

This webinar is Co-hosted by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) and the Graduate Nursing Student Academy.
The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) is proud to announce the third event in our 2018 IPEC Webinar Series aimed at highlighting trends and activities in interprofessional education (IPE) and practice.
IPE enables students from different disciplines to interact and learn in a way that prepares them for interprofessional collaborative practice. Innovative student-led initiatives and special student organizations strengthen existing models for IPE and create new opportunities for students to transform into effective members of a collaborative practice team. Students are uniquely positioned to help foster practices towards team-based care.
Heath professions students will share remarks on the formation, unique extracurricular activities, challenges, outcomes, and next steps related to their student-led IPE efforts. Panelists for the webinar include:

- Alvin Babu, President, New York University InterProfessional Education Group (IPEG), 3rd Year Dental Student, New York University College of Dentistry
Health professions faculty, students, and clinicians will discover best practices that they can use to assist with IPE efforts at their home institutions.
Objectives:
- Describe the key structure of student-led IPE associations at Jefferson University and New York University
- Identify developments, lessons learned, and opportunities related to student-led IPE initiatives

Lydia GlickPresident, Jefferson Students for Interprofessional Education (JSIPE)
Student, Jefferson University Sidney Kimmel Medical College
Ms. Glick is a second-year medical student at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is president of Students for Inter-Professional Practice (SIPP), a group whose focus is exposing students to interdisciplinary experiences early in their health education. Through SIPP, she has worked to organize multiple grand rounds, where different medical teams discuss how collaborative practice contributes to patient care.Lydia became interested in inter-professional practice while shadowing physicians and pharmacists at an anticoagulation clinic, and being impressed with the team-based approach to patient care.
Alvin BabuPresident, New York University InterProfessional Education Group
3rd Year Dental Student, New York University College of Dentistry
Mr. Babu is a 3rd year Dental student at the New York University College of Dentistry and the President of the InterProfessional Education Group (IPEG) at NYU. IPEG is an All-University organization that represents 11 different health professions: Nursing, Nurse Practitioner, Medicine, Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Social Work, Nutrition, and Global Public Health. Their mission is to seamlessly translate Inter-professional education (IPE) into Interprofessional practice (IPP) by transforming the students into members of a high performing, competent clinical team. Through IPEG, Alvin has continued to create opportunities for future health care professionals to work collaboratively in order to provide high quality, patient-centered care. Having previously worked for a Dentist who practiced in an Interprofessional setting, Alvin was not only able to witness its importance but also made sure to dedicate to continuing IPP for his future career.

Marta Okoniewski, MPADirector of Student Engagement
American Association of Colleges of Nursing
Marta Okoniewski is the Director of Student Engagement at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). Ms. Okoniewski helped with the development and launch of the GNSA, a national network providing high value programs, services, and resources to nursing students enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs. Prior to joining AACN, Ms. Okoniewski worked as the Program Coordinator at New York University College of Nursing (NYUCN) within the Academic and Clinical Affairs department. Ms. Okoniewski received her master’s in public administration from New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Scranton.

This webinar is free and open to everyone including non-members, communities of interest, practice representatives, and AACN member schools including deans, faculty, staff, and students.
Continuing Education Credits
Eligible attendees may receive one Certified in Public Health (CPH) continuing education credit or one continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hour for participating in this webinar. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is an accredited CNE-provider by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) works with the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) to provide CPH credits.
