Expanding Clinician's Understandings of Culturally Congruent Care

The 2015 revision of the American Nurses Associations (ANA) Code of Ethics reinforced that nurses must meet the individual needs of patients by providing culturally competent care. Today’s nurse must be well-equipped with the specific knowledge and skills needed to deliver thoughtful and thorough care. Partnering with interdisciplinary teams encourages nurses to adopt and exude the important characteristics of a skilled nurse. Faculty can facilitate this learning through innovative teaching strategies that assist nurses in valuing and recognizing unique needs of a diverse patient population. This webinar will explore how culturally competent care has the driving force in enhancing recognition and communication styles with the LGBTQIA+ patient population. The speaker will also provide a course development outline to demonstrate how you can ensure that you are providing culturally competent care in your practice setting.

Sara E. Groff currently serves as the Nurse Educator for Professional Development, Retention, and Engagement Strategies at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. In her role she assesses unit-specific needs for increased engagement among nurses. Recently, she serves as the ANCC Pathway to Excellence Program Coordinator which was achieved by MedStar in October 2017. She serves as a facilitator for the hospitals Vizient/UHC Nurse Residency Program. She also teaches as a clinical faculty instructor at George Washington University. She is currently in the MSN Entrepreneurial Innovative Advanced Nursing Practice program at Drexel University and earned her BSN from Goshen College in 2009.
