• Returning to our Nursing Roots to Lead the Way in the Social Mission
  At the turn of the 20th century, Abraham Flexner wrote a ground-breaking report on the need to transform medical education, which ultimately led to changes in health professions education as well. Spring forward to the 21st century and a group known as the Beyond Flexner Alliance, interprofessional in makeup, has challenged the health professions to focus on our social mission: not to ignore science, but to go beyond science to promote health equity. Come hear a national thought leader provide a provocative presentation of nursing roots and the social mission-we have embraced this concept from our beginnings.

• Entering the Era of Genomic Medicine
  Catalyzed by the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003, the last ~16 years have brought spectacular advances in genomics that dramatically empower the study of human biology and disease. The human genomics enterprise is now in the midst of an important transition, as the growing foundation of genomic knowledge is being used by researchers and clinicians to tackle increasingly complex problems in biomedicine. Revolutionary new DNA sequencing technologies now allow the routine generation of prodigious amounts of DNA sequence data, which are being used to gain new insights into the genomic bases of rare and common diseases. Meanwhile, effective clinical applications of genomics are now emerging. Together, these developments are ushering in the era of genomic healthcare.

• Emerging Healthcare Technologies: The Future is Here
  The landscape of higher education is changing rapidly due to a constant infusion of new and emerging technologies that are altering the way we think, plan and innovate. Artificial Intelligence, virtual reality, flexible sensors, in-the-moment learning, augmented reality, and robotics are all some of the new technologies/models either in testing or readily available. This innovator and entrepreneur will share a futuristic look at the technology that can be employed in the classroom or healthcare arena.

Diversity and Inclusion: A Journey Building Strength of Community through Differences
Nurse.com by OnCourse Learning and AACN joined forces to create an award that recognizes outstanding contributions made by an individual or a group that champion diversity, inclusion, and sustainability in nursing education. Recipients are chosen by AACN’s Board of Directors; AACN is proud to announce that this year’s award recipient is Dr. Marian Broome. Very few of us are prepared as deans to lead diversity, inclusion, and equity excellence initiatives. Yet, it is imperative that we develop multiple strategies to increase the diversity, inclusion and equity of our colleges. Learn how one college addressed these issues. This session describes how one school of nursing built a strong community through differences that led to an organizational culture marked by inclusive excellence.

Description: The American Nurses Association was the architect of Nursing’s Social Policy Statement and has been the driver for the social contract between nursing and society. This contract has evolved over time and demonstrates interplay with the Code of Ethics. Today, nursing is carving out its space in terms of our collective responsibility to social ethics, justice and individual health. What has our collective responsibility become? What space do we reside in with regard to our own mission as well as those of the other health professions? The president of ANA will offer an enlightening glimpse into the social evolution of nursing.

Leadership and Scholarship: The Future of Interprofessional Education
The Geraldine “Polly” Bednash Lectureship Award was established in March 2014 to honor AACN’s previous CEO, who led the association for 28 years. Award recipients are chosen by the AACN Board of Directors on the basis of their leadership and/or scholarly contributions to interprofessional education. AACN is proud to announce that this year’s award recipient is Dr. Brenda Zierler. With a long and distinguished career exploring the relationships between the delivery of health care and outcomes using an interprofessional lens, Dr. Zierler has made a substantial impact on interprofessional education, practice and research. She holds academic appointments in the School of Nursing, School of Medicine and the School of Public Health at the University of Washington and is past chair of the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative.

New Congress, New Focus: Perspectives from a Nursing Champion!
Newly elected Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, an RN from Illinois’s 14th Congressional District, is the youngest African American woman to serve in the United States House of Representatives, the first woman of color and millennial to represent her community, and a proud supporter of the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act. Prior to her election, as a registered nurse and Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, she worked to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters and bioterror threats. Congresswoman Underwood earned her BSN at the University of Michigan, her MSN at Johns Hopkins University, and is a proud former policy intern at AACN! Come hear how all nurses can make an impact on influencing health policy as we enter the 116th Congress.

Re-Envisioning Academic Nursing: Progress to Date on the Revision of the AACN Essentials
The AACN Essentials Task Force has been charged to revise all three of the current essentials documents simultaneously. The Task Force is comprised of three work groups: Baccalaureate, Master’s and Doctor of Nursing Practice, led by experienced leadership within the membership. The plan for action, associated timeline and opportunities for stakeholder engagement will be presented as it has unfolded and evolved over the last several months.

The Sustainable Development Goals from WHO: What is Nursing’s Role to Address Global Challenges?
The sustainable development goals have been designed as a blueprint to address global challenges in the areas of poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice. The target date to achieve the goals is 2030-a very aggressive agenda. The third goal is Good Health and Well Being, and will require a coordinated, dedicated workforce for the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality, prevention of substance abuse, reduction of traffic related deaths, and universal access to sexual and reproductive health care services. Dr. Morrision-Beedy offers perspective on the WHO initiative and implications for nursing academia and leadership.
