Motivational Teaching Strategies: Enhancing Student Learning

This Webinar will examine the nuts and bolts of how to successfully incorporate motivational teaching strategies in the online and/or classroom environment. These strategies may be used to enhance student learning at the BSN, and MSN Advanced Practice levels. NOTE: This Webinar is only open to deans, faculty, staff and students from AACN member schools of nursing.
Dr. Avis Johnson-Smith, a certified pediatric and family nurse practitioner with over 30 years of nursing experience, serves as Clinical Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Track Coordinator in the Department of Nursing at Angelo State University in San Angelo, TX. From a teaching perspective, she has over 25 years of teaching experience which includes but is not limited to Undergraduate Nursing courses, Master of Science in Nursing core courses, FNP courses, serving as Director of a FNP Program and managing a FNP Program Grant, serving as a FNP Track Coordinator, assisting in developing several FNP Programs, serving as preceptor for nurse practitioner students, and serving as a Pediatric Education Consultant. From a 22 year pediatric/adolescent and 17 year family nurse practitioner perspective, in addition to establishing and providing care in her own clinic (Healthy Kids and Families Wellness Center, LLC) in Albany, GA, she has also established and practiced in a hospital based rural health clinic and a school based clinic, worked in public health, a private pediatric practice and in occupational health. Dr. Johnson-Smith has learned how to successfully engage students by melding her teaching and practice experiences and incorporating them as part of her motivational teaching strategies. These strategies have helped students gain new knowledge, expand existing knowledge, improve critical thinking, promote clinical reasoning, and ignite an overall enthusiasm for learning. Dr. Johnson-Smith, who is affiliated with several professional organizations and has presented various topics at conferences, workshops, and/or forums, received her Associate Degree in Nursing from Albany Junior College (Darton), Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Valdosta State University, Master of Science in Nursing from Troy University, Post Master’s Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certificate from Emory University, Post Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate from Albany State University, Distance Education Certificate from Thomas Edison College, and Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree from the University of Minnesota.
