How the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Will Impact the Future of Nursing
Webinar Description
In September 2015, all Member States of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Agenda as a commitment to achieving equity, inclusion, and safety for all peoples everywhere by 2030. The Agenda is composed of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets that focus on five themes: People, Planet, Peace, Prosperity, and Partnership. Nurses play key roles in attaining each of the 17 SDGs through reform in practice, research, and education. By integrating the vision of the SDGs into local and global nursing initiatives, the profession has the potential to become a forerunner in health equity attainment through interdisciplinary collaboration and policy advancement. The SDGs represent the future of nursing and an invitation to expand our disciplinary scopes for the betterment of individuals, families, communities, populations, and at the planet at large.
A topic most recently discussed at the 2018 AACN Thought Leaders Assembly. A meeting created as an opportunity to engage AACN’s Board, a small designated group of invited guests, as well as select AACN members and senior staff to process information, trends, and challenges in a new way. The 2018 assembly was titled, The Global Nursing Workforce: Examining International Trends to Combat the Nursing Shortage. After a compelling presentation at the event by Mr. Rosa, the attendees wanted to engage the entire AACN community in this critical conversation.
Objectives:
- Discuss a brief history and the vision of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
- Identify the nursing’s myriad roles in the attainment of the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
- Articulate opportunities for nursing to contribute to health equity - local to global - through integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into nursing practice, research, and education initiatives.
