Innovations in Health Care: Preparing Nurses to Think like Detectives, Inventors, and Entrepreneurs
Today’s clinical practice brings with it challenges for clinicians and the educators responsible to prepare tomorrow’s workforce. Identifying opportunities to leverage new technologies in practice has tremendous potential for improving healthcare outcomes. This session will explore the use of smart technologies and other innovations in improving healthcare and the roles nurses can and should play in identifying and implementing new technologies and reinventing “old” technologies. As nurses continue to be on the front lines of the care continuum, their experience and expertise is critical in designing and improving care. Clinicians and educators must ensure that nursing leaders are empowered to develop and implement changes to streamline the patient pathway and improve outcomes.

- How to Make Interprofessional Education and Practice Thrive in Your Academic-Practice Partnerships
Come to this session and hear the interprofessional perspective from nursing and social work -- cutting-edge strategies and resources to ensure that your academic-practice partnership is promoting interprofessional education and practice which leads to better patient outcomes.
Speakers: Kathy McGuinn, MSN, RN, Director of Interprofessional Education and Practice Partnerships, Special Advisor on Quality Initiatives, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and JoAnn Regan, PhD, MSW, Vice-President of Education, Council on Social Work Education - Preparing Nursing Leaders in Health Informatics In an Era of Big Data
Explore what graduates need to know to assume informatics leadership in the era of data-driven health care. In addition, today’s graduates will need leadership skills to manage interprofessional stakeholders such as teams that are learning to use a new technology, administrators who need information about the potential for reuse of electronic health record data to improve care quality, or students who hope to earn a new credential in informatics. All of these scenarios require us to be knowledgeable regarding the specific informatics and leadership competencies that are likely to optimize outcomes. Participants will gain self-knowledge through completing the Minnesota Nursing Informatics InventoryTM (MNILI) based on the competing values framework and discuss using this framework in nursing informatics leadership education and training.
Speaker: Karen Monsen, PhD, RN, Associate Professor, Director, Center for Nursing Informatics, Director, Omaha System Partnership, University of Minnesota - Simulation: So Much More than Plastic
Simulation encompasses much more than a plastic manikin. The pedagogy of simulation includes pre-briefing, debriefing, and devising engaging learning opportunities for professional practice. Reimagined, simulation skills are applicable to many aspects of MSN education. This presentation will provide you with some new ideas and a good reason to get to know your academic simulationists.
Speaker: Suzan Kardong-Edgren, PhD, RN, Professor and RISE Center Director, Robert Morris University - Strategies to Advance Evidence-Based Teaching
Although evidence-based practice (EBP) has been a focus in health care since 1992, it continues to provide challenges for the effective implementation of evidence driven care. The nursing profession was challenged to have 90% of all activities based on evidence by 2020. Students are being taught to use EBP, but instructors continue to teach as they were taught or what seems to be working for the majority. Decisions, whether clinical or educational, must be based upon sound evidence. Teaching nursing curricula requires strategies based in evidence. This presentation will provide practical ideas for moving your teaching processes toward an evidence-based level. Foundational information on accessing and confirming evidence to determine best practices will be provided. Three to four teaching strategies, such as flipped classroom, OSCE, and “just in time” learning, will be used to demonstrate the expectations in a desire to stimulate dialogue for future development.
Speaker: Carol Boswell, EdD, RN, Professor, James A. “Buddy” Davidson Charitable Foundation Endowed Chair for Evidence-Based Practice, Co-Director of the Center of Excellence in Evidence-Based Practice, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center - Using Data to Fuel Innovation and Excellence in Nursing Practice
With the advancement of technology, MSN prepared nurses are in key positions to stimulate change through the use of data and visual analytics. MSN nurses can be empowered to use data to analyze outcomes and improve the health and safety of their patient or client population. Few nursing professionals are taking advantage of the data that is being collected and stored in numerous database systems by different types of technology. By using data analytics nurses are in a position to implement change and initiate programs, in order to improve outcomes and quality of care. This presentation will introduce faculty to the educational needs of nurses in identifying sources of data, in using guiding principles of data collection and how to begin using analytics to improve the health and safety of the population they serve.
Speaker: Debra Wolf, PhD, RN, Professor of Nursing, Healthcare Informatics, and Director, Healthcare Informatics, Chatham University, School of Health Sciences, and Kim Olszewski, DNP, CRNP, Associate Professor and Director, DNP and NP Programs, Bloomsburg University
This presentation will explore trends and projections for the nursing workforce, which point to new opportunities on the horizon for professional nurses. Participants will consider how changing norms, care delivery, and patient expectations will likely affect the roles for registered nurses and how we educate them. Come share your thoughts on the future of nursing education and how best to prepare the next generation of nurse clinicians, scientists, and leaders.
Speaker: Debra Barksdale, PhD, FNP-BC, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Professor, Alumni Endowed Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University

Nursing’s Role in Sustaining Global Health
Advances in human health have come during a time of great cost to the natural systems of the earth that sustain life. As health providers, scientists, educators, and leaders, nurses must understand the connection between human health and the health of the planet - a concept commonly known as planetary health. In this session, explore the drivers of planetary health, the importance of global health competency education, and the role of nursing in making health systems more resilient in an era of increasing stresses.
Speaker: Ann Kurth, PhD, CNM, Dean and the Linda Koch Lorimer Professor of Nursing, Yale University
