Plenary: The Context for Innovation*

The facilitators begin by defining innovation and developing the context for what innovation means and looks like in academic nursing. We will examine the history of innovation in healthcare/nursing higher education, as well as the trends on the horizon. We discuss modern barriers to innovation, both systemic and cultural, and begin to identify opportunities for innovation within our own institutions and programs.
Facilitator: Kate Ebner and Darcie Milazzo

10:30-10:45 a.m.
Good Morning Coffee and Tea Break

10:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Plenary: Leading Systematic Change*
As higher education evolves from a historically hierarchical system towards a more flexible, collaborative model, nurse educators must be able to see the structures, cultures and realities that influence outcomes. How do things actually “get done?” Who must be considered when leading change? The facilitators introduce systems thinking and provide strategies for innovation on a spectrum from “radical incrementalism” to disruptive approaches that can lead to breakthroughs and long-term success.
Facilitator: Kate Ebner and Darcie Milazzo

12:00-1:00 p.m.
Lunch (on your own)

1:00-1:30 p.m.
Plenary: Becoming an Innovative Leader
Critics of higher education point to the need for reform, innovation, and action, yet leading innovation requires a mindset and skillset that is often absent in academic settings. What does it mean to become an innovative leader? We outline the attributes of innovative leadership and the paradigm shift needed to lead change.
Facilitator: Kate Ebner

1:45-2:30 p.m.
Breakout Sessions*
These sessions are conversational and tap the wisdom and expertise of participants. In a World Café style session, participants’ ideas, experiences and insights are leveraged to develop useful, creative perspectives on each topic. You may select one session.

  • Defining Innovation Related to Trends in Academic Nursing
A number of central questions highlight the challenges in academic nursing today. In this breakout group, we reframe the challenges and look at the trends and posit what innovation could mean in that arena.
    Facilitator: Darcie Milazzo
  • Innovating Financial Models
In this breakout session, we explore how innovation may be applied to conventional financial models in academic nursing. First, we identify typical approaches and consider the limitations and strengths of these models. After brief discussion, we focus on bringing an innovator’s mindset to the challenge of creating financially and educationally sustainable programs.
Facilitator: TBD supported by Izzy Martens of Nebo
  • Innovative Leadership Case Studies
Looking at examples from Marymount University, Arlington VA, and Augusta University, Augusta GA, we examine the innovation challenge and solution, exploring not only what made this an example of innovation, but how leaders moved these ideas forward within their institutions.
Facilitators: Pamela Cook, DNP, RN, Interim Associate Dean, Academic and Student Affairs, Associate Professor, Colle of Nursing and The Graduate School, Augusta University, Augusta, GA and Eileen Caulfield, PhD, RN, Chair Undergraduate Program, Assistant Professor, Malek School of Health Professions, Marymount University, Arlington, VA. supported by Kate Ebner of Nebo

2:30-3:00 p.m.
Networking Break

3:00-4:30 p.m.
Plenary: The Innovator’s Mindset: Seeing New Possibilities in Old Problems*
Innovation is a hot topic, yet for leaders who are charged with sparking change and bringing new ideas, it can be challenging to innovate when looking at familiar issues from the same angles. The facilitators explore what it means to adopt an “innovator’s mindset” and begin to look at old issues in a new way. Participants identify an innovation challenge related to their work, and we shift the lens to see where innovation may be possible. The output of this session is identification of the innovation challenge to take back to their campuses.
Facilitator: Kate Ebner and Darcie Milazzo

Plenary: Design Thinking Intensive*
Design thinking can unlock creative solutions for strategy, organizational design, curriculum development and how services and programs are conceptualized and delivered. This approach to innovation can lead to exciting outcomes, but must be adapted in the higher education setting to fit with institutional, academic culture. The facilitators introduce the four big questions that guide design thinking and allow participants to draw upon logic, curiosity, imagination, inquiry and systemic reasoning to experiment with how they might use design thinking to lead innovation.
Facilitator: Kate Ebner and Darcie Milazzo
