Achieving the Next Level of Excellence: In Practice, Education & Career
Details
The CNL Summit provides a national forum for all healthcare and academic audiences currently implementing or interested in exploring CNL education and practice. Major health systems across the nation have discovered how CNLs transform practice and improve care. The Summit showcases these achievements in education and practice and provides tools to enhance an understanding of the changing healthcare environment and the value added by CNLs. The role of CNLs is growing and expanding outside the hospital. The summit provides a great opportunity to network and learn about the vast work of CNL’s across the healthcare continuum.
Offering robust discussions related to the changing healthcare and practice environments, this conference is ideal for deans, faculty, CNOs, nurse managers, other health professionals, practicing CNLs and students! Participants will also earn CE hours.
The 2020 CNL Research Symposium, is a pre-conference workshop to the CNL Summit that focuses on the CNL’s role in data collection, evaluation for reporting clinical outcomes, and quality improvement. The CNL Research Symposium is scheduled for the morning of the CNL Summit (separate registration required). This workshop unites faculty, practicing CNLs, students, healthcare administrators, nurse executives, physicians, financial officers and others. Participants will also earn CE hours.

Opening Keynote Address - Selling Yourself and the CNL Role Using Social Media
The media landscape has changed a lot in 20 years. So has nursing. Yet, nurses remain invisible in health news stories with no progress made in the past 20 years despite their increasing levels of education, unique roles, and expertise. Clinical Nurse Leaders have stories to share that can describe the problem, connect the dots to bigger social issues- including poverty, inequity, mental illness, and offer workable solutions. Learn the tools to be sources and media makers on all media platforms. Become media savvy so you can amplify the voice of Clinical Nurse Leaders.

Plenary Session - Achieving Quality Outcomes in a Changing Healthcare Environment
St Lucie Medical Center piloted the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) role in 2006 collaborating with Florida Atlantic University as the Academic Partner. The first five years showed significant improvement in the clinical outcomes of core measures and hospital acquired conditions. The hospital has doubled the number of CNLs including promotions into other nursing roles. With the changes in healthcare including technology, bundled payments and value-based purchasing, the role of the CNL continues to reinvent itself showing a high return on investment (ROI).

Design thinking has been used for years in the engineering and business fields, but it's customer focus is of great value in healthcare. Harnessing clinical workarounds and ideas to transform clinical practice is needed. Using the design thinking methods to optimize improvements that affect care delivery can expedite meaningful change that results in improved patient and staff satisfaction, improved quality, and creation of a culture that thrives on continual improvement.

As the number of CNL education programs and graduates throughout the country continues to grow, it is critical for CNL students and faculty to know how to prepare for the CNL Certification Exam. Earning the CNL credential reflects a deep personal commitment and sense of accountability, inspiring credibility and confidence in a CNL’s professional knowledge. This session will include an overview of the CNL certification exam, as well as its administration and development. Participants also will learn effective methods for reviewing and preparing for the exam.
Speaker: Shantal Johnson, Director, Commission on Nursing Certification, Washington, DC. - Why Should I Hire You? The CNO and CNL Perspective
In today’s resource scarce healthcare environment, Chief Nursing Officers (CNO) are looking for force multipliers that lead healthcare teams in coordinating care and analyzing system gaps. The Clinical Nurse leader is prepared to improve and sustain patient outcomes promoting our metrics to ZERO harm.. The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is the ideal role to meet the challenges faced by many CNO’s throughout the United States. This session will answer the question; Why should a CNO hire a CNL.

Healthcare delivery is enormously complex, and can be dangerous when errors occur. The same systems needed to save lives often include processes that can cause serious harm. As healthcare organizations model themselves after safer industries such as airline and nuclear power, the journey to high reliability requires continuous robust process improvement. Although improvements can and should occur at a macro level, without frontline staff involvement sustainable change is impossible to achieve. How can CNLs facilitate change at the point of care? What techniques and tools are available to assist in process improvement and change management?
Speaker: Amjed Baghdadi, Chief Quality Management Officer, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, San Antonio, TX.

Plenary - The CNL and Population Health: Improving Health Outcomes
Increasing evidence shows that health outcomes cannot be improved significantly without transforming the way healthcare providers and society as a whole think about and address structural influences of health. As CNLs diversify where they practice and expand their areas of influence, it is imperative the also transform the way they think and practice. A panel of CNLs will share how and where they practice, the populations they serve, and how they are re-thinking their roles in improving health outcomes.

Closing Plenary - How CNLs Can Build a Culture to Improve Health Outcomes
Dr. Hassmiller has provided foresight and leadership in shaping our nation’s conversation around population health and improving health outcomes for all. She will describe how health is greatly influenced by non-medical factors that affect communities, such as access to jobs that pay a living wage, safe housing, reliable transportation, walkable neighborhoods, good schools, fresh food, and adequate green spaces. She will discuss how hospitals and health systems are partnering with community organizations to improve the conditions where people, live, learn, work, play, and worship. Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNLs), who are skilled as patient advocates, educators, and communicators between physicians and families, have great potential for identifying risks and connecting patients more effectively with institutions and organizations outside the medical system.
Speaker: Susan Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, Senior Advisor for Nursing, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Washington, DC.
