Alcohol SBI Part III: Integration into Graduate Nursing Curricula

Alcohol screening is an important part of every health visit. Advanced practice nurses play an important role in screening and intervening with patients, to not only highlight the consequences of alcohol use, but also to help manage related health problems. This webinar will present an overview about this evidence-based practice. It will present: 1) a model for integrating Alcohol SBI into graduate nursing curricula, 2) an overview of advanced practice clinical and leadership nursing roles, and 3) available resources that may enable faculty to incorporate this information into teaching advance practice nurses.

Ann Mitchell, PhD, RN, FAAN
Professor of Nursing
University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing

Dr. Mitchell is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. She is currently the Project Director (PI) on two Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funded grants designed to teach Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) to Emergency Department Registered Nurses (EDRN) and Interprofessional Groups of Anesthesia Students (InGAS). She is also funded by SAMHSA to integrate SBIRT training into the Nurse Practitioner curriculum, addressing substance use across the lifespan. Lastly, she is working with the CDC on two projects to incorporate Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention into nursing practice with the ultimate goal of preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Kathy Puskar, DrPH, RN, FAAN
Professor and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education

Dr. Puskar is Professor and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Dr. Puskar is the PI of a study funded by HRSA, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Interprofessional Collaborative Practice, targeting substance use in rural populations. She was also PI of a HRESA funded grant on Addictions Training for Nurses Using Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment. Dr. Puskar’s Addictions Training Manual is available for distribution and copyrighted by the University of Pittsburgh.

Irene Kane, PhD, RN, CNAA, EP-C

Dr. Irene Kane is an Associate Professor of Nursing with extensive clinical, teaching, and research experience in developing and teaching health promotion programs emphasizing disease prevention and health management to improve psychobiological wellbeing. Dr. Kane is a certified SBIRT trainer with over 25 papers published in peer-reviewed journals.

Holly Hagle, PhD
Director of the National SBIRT ATTC
Institute for Research, Education, and Training in Addictions (IRETA)

Dr. Holly Hagle has been actively working with providers since joining the IRETA in 2003. She is the Director of the National Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment Addiction Technology Transfer Center (National SBIRT ATTC) at IRETA. Dr. Hagle oversees all of the training and educational initiatives. She oversees the curriculum development and project coordination for three HRSA SBIRT federally funded projects with the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing since 2006. Additionally, Dr. Hagle is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Health and Community Systems at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.

Deborah Finnell, DNS, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP, FAAN
Associate Professor and Director of Master’s and DNP Programs
Johns Hopkins School of Nursing

Dr. Deborah Finnell has specialized in mental health and addictions for the majority of her career. From her grounding as a registered nurse working in inpatient psychiatry, she expanded her role to that of a clinical nurse specialist and then a nurse practitioner. She brings her passion for the neurobiological bases of mental health and addictions to her clinical practice, teaching, research, and policy / advocacy. Her professional leadership roles range from Chair of the New York State Peer Assistance Committee to President-Elect and President of the International Nurses Society on Addictions (2008-2012). She served as Chair of the Addictions Nursing Certification Board and currently serves on the Committee on Nursing Standards for the American Nurses Association. She is a board member of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA) and Associate Editor for the Substance Abuse journal. With a long-term appointment with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Hospital Administration, she has conducted funded research focusing on improving the health of Veterans with mental disorders and substance use disorders.
