Deborah Finnell, DNS

Dr. Deborah Finnell has been a registered nurse for over 4 decades, specializing in psychiatric / mental health nursing, prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. She has published on the role of the professional nurse in SBIRT provision, integrating content on the continuum of substance use into nursing curricula, development and testing of SBIRT implementation models – all with the goal of moving SBIRT into the mainstream of nursing practice. Her current work focuses on integrating SBIRT-related content in the masters’ nursing curriculum at Johns Hopkins University. She recently produced, and is currently testing a brief video intervention designed to bring the evidence about the neurobiological base of alcohol-use disorders directly to at-risk individuals.

Holly Hagle, PhD

Dr. Holly Hagel has been actively working with providers since joining the IRETA in 2003. She is the Director of the National Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment Addiction Technology Transfer Center (National SBIRT ATTC) at IRETA. Dr. Hagle oversees all of the training and educational initiatives. She oversees the curriculum development and project coordination for three HRSA SBIRT federally funded projects with the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing since 2006. Additionally, Dr. Hagle is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Health and Community Systems at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.

Ann Mitchell, PhD, RN

Dr. Ann Mitchell is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Dr. Mitchell is currently the Project Director (PI) on two HRSA-funded grants designed to teach Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) to Emergency Department Registered Nurses (EDRN) and Interprofessional Groups of Anesthesia Students (InGAS). She is also funded by SAMHSA to integrate SBIRT training into the Nurse Practitioner curriculum, addressing substance use across the lifespan. Lastly, she is working with the CDC on two projects to incorporate Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention (Alcohol SBI) into nursing practice with the ultimate goal of preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
