Webinar Description

Hosted by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC)

The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) is proud to announce the sixth event in our 2018 IPEC Webinar Series aimed at highlighting trends and activities in interprofessional education (IPE) and practice.

According to the Health Resources & Services Administration August 2018 statistics, there are 17,445 designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) and 4,268 designated Medically Underserved Areas/Populations (MUA/P) across the country. Within those population areas,74 million Americans live in primary care HPSAs, more than 55 million live in dental HPSAs, and over 107 million reside in mental health HPSAs. Many of these individuals live in areas identified as having all three types of shortages. Widening and improving access to health care for the medically underserved continues to be a serious growing national concern. A variety of innovative programs are necessary to train more providers and offer greater and better access to underserved areas.

Panelists will share remarks on how to foster and support interprofessional collaborative practices to serve underserved populations and contribute to the reduction of health disparities.

Panelists for this webinar include:

  • Kim E. Fenesy, DMD, Vice Dean, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Dental Medicine
  • James R. Kilgore, PhD, PA-C, Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences, University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), School of Health Professions

Objectives:

  • Describe approaches at Rutgers and UAB to transform health disparities through interprofessional education, research, and practice
  • Share strategies and models used to integrate interprofessional clinical learning experiences to increase students’ skills in providing community-based primary care
  • Analyze the lessons learned in implementing interprofessional health promotion programs for underserved populations
