Medical Marijuana Part II–Guidelines for Patients

According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), 61% of responding prelicensure programs and 45% of responding graduate programs are teaching cannabis content in required courses, with most including less than 1 to 3 hours of content. Join NCSBN and AACN for a three-part series to discuss how to update curricular content on the use of medical marijuana in pre-licensure and graduate nursing programs, based on the Guidelines for Medical Marijuana released in the July 2018 Supplement to the Journal of Nursing Regulation (JNR).
Part II of the series features an overview of the NCSBN National Medical Marijuana Guidelines for Nursing Care of the Patient Using Medical Marijuana.
Objectives:
- Identify the essential knowledge and practice considerations for the nurse who will be caring for a patient that is using medical marijuana
- Identify the medical marijuana administration provisions of the MMP
- Describe the objectives for medical marijuana education in pre-licensure nursing programs

Kathleen Russell, a lawyer and a nurse, is a Senior Policy Advisor in the Division of Nursing Regulation for NCSBN. In this position, she is responsible for services provided to member boards related to discipline, alternative to discipline programs, substance use disorder, licensure fraud, and acts as a liaison/consultant for Nursing Regulation, Nursys®, as well as the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB). Kathleen has a particular interest in education of investigators and attorneys. She is a contributing editor and frequent author for the Journal of Nursing Regulation.
Kathleen’s professional background includes almost 40 years of nursing, legal, and non-profit leadership experience. She has practiced as a pediatric clinical nurse specialist, nursing educator, and as a trial attorney.
