Interprofessional Teaching and Collaborative Practice During COVID-19: A Community Conversation

Dusti Annan-Coultas, EdD is Assistant Professor and Director of Operations in the Office of Interprofessional Initiatives at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Annan’s background is in the area of education and instructional technology, and her teaching and research interests include teaching innovations, experiential learning, instructional technology, faculty professional development for teaching.

Kimberly Kascak is an instructor in the Office of Interprofessional Initiatives at the Medical Unviersity of South Carolina. Kimberly graduated from the College of Charleston with a bachelor’s degree in Special Education and has an M. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction.

In 2016, she joined the South Carolina AHEC Program Office in July as the Curriculum Coordinator for the Office of Telehealth Education. Kimberly has extensive national and international experience educating children with disabilities. As a Peace Corps volunteer, she taught Moroccan children attending Beni-Mellal School for the Blind. In the United States, a great portion of Kimberly’s experience has centered on children with severe disabilities, and she is a co-founder of Pattison’s Academy, a non-profit, public charter school specializing in this population. Kimberly is also an author of the developing Pediatric Sensory Modality Assessment and Rehabilitation Technique (SMART). Kimberly spent the many years promoting personalized and individualized student learning among educators and administrators in the Charleston County school district as well as providing information technology mentorship to students and staff.

As Executive Director of the Office of Instructional Technology and Faculty Resources, Dr. Mauldin brings over 20 years of experience in instructional design and educational technology, leading a team of instructional designers, multimedia specialists, programmers, and graphic artists in the design of interactive online instructional programs. The team has created over 250 online web-based programs, with several used by over 300,000 participants from around the world.

As Associate Director of Education of the Office of Interprofessional Initiatives, Dr. Mauldin provides consultation in the development of interprofessional education courses and experiences. These programs focus on the integration and assessment of interprofessional teamwork in education, research and practice as a means to improve health care for individuals and communities.

For six years, she led the Interprofessional Faculty and Staff Development Institute, providing over one hundred faculty and staff the opportunity to gain experience in interprofessional teamwork and practice. She has also served as the advisor for the Maralynne D. Mitcham Interprofessional Fellowship, and led MUSC’s research project for the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education.

Edward L. Rogan, PharmD, BCACP, FCPhA earned his bachelor of science in biology from University of Illinois and his doctor of pharmacy from University of Iowa. Originally from Chicago, Dr. Rogan followed his Californian wife to the West Coast to pursue a career as a pharmacy manager. He oversaw a community site for Pacific's Advance Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) program. Dr. Rogan received the Stockton Region Preceptor of the Year award in 2006 for his excellence in facilitating students on rotations. Dr. Rogan has a wealth of experience in pharmacy practice from working at an independent pharmacy. He became a member of the Pacific faculty in 2014. Dr. Rogan currently precepts a Veterans Affairs telehealth clinic.

Holly H. Wise, PT, PhD, FNAP is a Fellow in the National Academies of Practice and is an academic educator with a breadth of experience in interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice. She has worked in settings ranging from acute care to rehabilitation centers, co-owned a private practice for 13 years, and co-founded two interprofessional post-polio evaluation clinics.

She served from 2012-2018 as the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) representative to the Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education, Health and Medicine Division, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (formerly known as the Institute of Medicine). She currently continues to serve as the ACAPT alternate representative to the Global Forum as well as the Interprofessional Education Collaborative.

Dr. Wise has multiple publications and presentations related to the scholarship of teaching with a focus on IPE and collaborative practice.

Deepti Vyas, PharmD earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Purdue University in 2006. She then completed a pharmacy practice and administration residency at Moses Cone Health Systems in Greensboro, North Carolina. She is currently the Director of Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of the Pacific. She runs an IPE program consisting of students from eight different health professions and across four US states. Prior to coming to Pacific, she was a faculty member at University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy and was a practicing clinical pharmacist.

When Dr. Vyas is not teaching, she enjoys traveling. Her love for travel stems from her background; she is originally from India, while she was born in Malaysia, she grew up in Kenya before moving to the United States.

Lisa Howley is an Educational Psychologist who has spent over 20 years advancing medical education. She currently leads strategic efforts to support the advancement of teaching and learning across the continuum of medical education. Prior to becoming the Senior Director of Initiatives and Partnerships at the Association of American Medical Colleges, she served as the Assistant Vice President of Medical Education and Physician Development for the Carolinas HealthCare System in North Carolina. In that role, she led a number of medical education initiatives across the professional development continuum, including graduate medical education accreditation and physician leadership development. She concurrently served as the Assistant Professor of Educational Research at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where she supported curriculum and faculty development at the UNC regional campus in Charlotte, and engaged in scholarship contributing to empirical and conceptual literature in evaluation and assessment of clinical performance.

She received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Central Florida, and both her Master of Education and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Virginia.

Kathy McGuinn, MSN, RN, CPHQ, FNAP is the Director of Interprofessional Education and Practice Partnerships and Special Advisor on Quality Initiatives at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). Ms. McGuinn has been a leader for AACN’s strategic initiatives related to interprofessional education and practice, which include assisting with the planning of the national Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Institutes; actively participating with the Interprofessional Professionalism Collaborative (IPC); and partnering with the Schwartz Center on collaborative compassionate care. Most recently, Ms. McGuinn was the lead staff for AACN’s 2016 groundbreaking report, Advancing Healthcare Transformation: A New Era for Academic Nursing. This report has strong interprofessional underpinnings.

Dr. Kelly Ragucci received her undergraduate pharmacy degree from Ohio Northern University and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Toledo. Subsequently, she completed a clinical pharmacy residency in Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Kelly was a faculty member at Wilkes University for 2 years and then on faculty at MUSC for 19 years. She served as Assistant Dean for Curriculum for 4 of those years and as Department Chair of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes Sciences for 6 years.

She is currently the Vice President of Professional Development with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). Her teaching and research interests include interprofessional education, the scholarship of teaching and learning, educational technology, transformative practice models and women’s health.

She has published a total of 59 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. Dr. Ragucci is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist. She is an active member of a variety of professional organizations, including AACP, American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and IPEC.
