Transitioning from the practice arena to the educator role can be challenging. Not only will you be changing roles, but you must also learn to redirect your mission from providing quality health care to your patients in practice, to aligning yourself with the university and their defined mission of teaching, scholarship and service. As you evolve from a student to an educator, there are tools you can utilize which will allow you to fluidly move from novice to expert.

Dr. Maloney will provide you with tools for success in the academic environment. These tools will include strategies for teaching while balancing scholarship and service as well as techniques for handling the unexpected and unpleasant aspects of the role such as managing student expectations and disappointments while maintaining appropriate standards of conduct centered on patient safety and quality. Learn strategies for effective teaching, motivating students and managing student expectations whether in the classroom or clinical setting.

Patsy Maloney, EdD, RN-BC, NEA-BC

Professor and Director, Continuing Nursing Education, Pacific Lutheran University

Currently Patsy Maloney is Professor and Director of Professional Development and Continuing Studies at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA where she has taught since 1994 in both the undergraduate and graduate programs that include RN to BSN and accelerated entry students. She has over 39 years of clinical, educational, and administrative experience. Her clinical experience includes Emergency, Medical-Surgical, Critical Care, and Pediatric nursing. She has given numerous local and national presentations on leadership, education, and emergency care. She has been the Chief, Nursing Education for a 1000 person nursing department. She is the lead author of Managing School Emergencies I, II, and III the Student and Instructor Manuals. She is the Section Editor for Foundations of Practice in the Core Curriculum for Professional Development, 3rd & 4th Editions. She authored “Planning a Course” in A Guide for the Nurse Educator: Mastering the Teaching Role by Dr. Barbara Penn.

Patsy’s education includes a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Maryland, master’s degrees from the Catholic University of America (MSN and MA in psychology), and her doctorate is from the University of Southern California.
