Enhancing Competency-Based Education and Assessment with Video Simulations

Dr. Laurie Kennedy-Malone highlights a year-long project funded by AACN’s Faculty Scholar Grant Program at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNCG). During this project, five new clinical simulations, with faculty guides, were developed with the goal of designing competency-based video simulations that facilitate formative assessment of nurse practitioner students’ clinical decision-making skills. The simulations come with a guide, written by UNCG nurse practitioners, which lists the specific Essentials domains and concepts for advanced-level nursing education sub-competencies, used to enhance the student learning experience.
Objectives:
- Describe the process of developing clinical video simulations and faculty guides developed for nurse practitioner curriculum
- Summarize the process used to validate the AACN Advanced Essentials with the clinical video simulations/faculty guides
- Discuss the use of clinical video simulations in nurse practitioner curriculum

Laurie Kennedy-Malone has been a certified gerontological nurse practitioner since 1982 and a professor of nursing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) since 1990. She was the 2007 recipient of the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing Faculty Champion and the National Conference of Gerontological Nurse Practitioners' Excellence in Education Award in 2006. In November 2018, she was awarded a Certificate of Recognition for Excellence as a Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing by the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence. She coauthored Integrating Gerontological Content into Advanced Practice Nursing Education and Advanced Practice Nursi ng in the Care of Older Adults. Both books received AJN Book of the Year Awards. She has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications. A former president of the National Conference of Gerontological Nurse Practitioners, she later served as a Director at Large of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA). In 2020, Dr. Kennedy-Malone received the Excellence in Leadership Award from GAPNA and, in 2021, the Excellence in Creativity & Innovation, Edith Moore Copeland Founders Award from Sigma Theta Tau International. Dr. Kennedy-Malone is a recent recipient of the AACN Faculty Scholars Grant Program for her work on Enhancing Nurse Practitioner Competency-Based Education and Assessment with Innovative Video Simulations.

As a leading public health concern of the 21st century, climate change will continue to affect global population health. Health professionals and health professions educators have important and unique roles in proactively addressing climate change and its implications. To try and create a healthier, climate-resilient future, schools and programs that train health professions students should integrate climate change and its health effects into the curricula.
Webinar participants will hear models and resources that can be used to help institutions integrate climate-health content into health professions curricula.
Objectives
- Compare educational models and resources to train health professions students to prevent, mitigate, and respond to the health consequences of climate change
- Apply the new GCCHE Climate & Health Competencies for Health Professions Students
- Summarize “lessons learned” in the development and implementation of climate-health curricula

Cecilia Sorensen, MD is the Director of the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education at Columbia University, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Columbia Irving Medical Center and Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. Dr. Sorensen received her Doctor of Medicine from Drexel University College of Medicine and completed a four-year emergency medicine residency at Denver Health. Following residency training, she completed a 2-year fellowship in climate change and human health policy with the National Ins titute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). Her work focuses on the intersection of climate change and health and how policy solutions, clinical action and education can build resilience in vulnerable communities. She currently serves on the working group for the National Academy of Medicine’s Climate and Human Health Initiative. She was an author for the U.S. Fourth National Climate Assessment and serves as a technical advisor for the Lancet Climate and Health U.S. Policy Brief. She is the co-editor of the textbook Climate Change and Human Health: From Science to Practice.

Dr. Potter is deeply committed to climate change education including co-founding Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate, membership in the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, and membership on the American Academy of Nursing Environment and Public Health Expert Panel. She is a member of the Coordinating Committee of Columbia University’s Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education and a Fellow in the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota. She chairs Clinicians for Planetary Health (C4PH) and is a member of the Steering Committee of the Planetary Health Alliance at Harvard.
At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Potter designed and co-teaches an interdisciplinary course titled “The Global Climate Challenge: Creating an Empowered Movement for Change”. In addition, she co-leads a Health Sciences initiative titled, “Climate Change and Health: An Interprofessional Response”. In 2019, Dr. Potter was appointed the first Director of Planetary Health for the School of Nursing.
In addition, Dr. Potter is Executive Editor for the Interdisciplinary Journal of Partnership Studies; a peer-reviewed, open-access, online jour nal promoting interdisciplinary collaboration as a solution for solving society’s grand challenges.

Dr. Casey Shillam is a Professor at the University of Portland, School of Nursing. Dr. Shillam completed her PhD and MSN degrees at the Oregon Health and Science University in 2008 and 2004, respectively. She joined the faculty of University of Portland in 2008 after working as a home health nurse at Signature Home Health. Dr. Shillam has taught in both the undergraduate and graduate programs across many courses. Her research interests include the development of peer-mentoring programs and the referral patterns of older primary care patients to specialty pain management centers. Dr. Shillam served as a member of the former Essentials Task Force.
Marjorie S. Wiggins, DNP, MBA, RN, FAAN, NEA-BC

Marge Wiggins is Chief Nursing Officer of Maine Medical Center. An Adjunct Faculty in USM’s School of Nursing, Marge has published numerous articles and several book chapters on care delivery models. She led MMC’s development of the evidence-based Partnership Care Delivery Model, and consulted in the US and abroad on the topic. She served on several committees for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s efforts to implement the Clinical Nurse Leader role and delivered nearly 40 presentations in 14 states. Marge maintains membership in several professional organizations, including American Organization of Nurse Executives, Organization of Maine Nurse Executives, Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science-Eastern Nurses Research Society, and the Clinical Nurse Leader Association. Dr. Wiggins served as a practice partner member of the former Essentials Task Force.
