This webinar will provide an overview of some of the concepts related to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and ways to ensure ethical conduct and protection of human subjects in research. It will also guide and support graduate students in the steps of both writing and preparing a successful IRB application and how to respond to IRB clarifications. Lastly, a review of the indications to submit an IRB modification and any additional documentation needed that often accompanies an IRB submission will be discussed.
Objectives
- Understand the significance and role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) in ensuring ethical conduct and protection of human subjects in research.
- Navigate the IRB process through a step-by-step process of preparing and submitting an IRB application, including required documentation and timelines.
- Discuss ethical principles in research that guide IRB review, such as informed consent, confidentiality, and minimizing risks to participants.
- Provide guidance on how to interpret and respond to IRB feedback, including clarificat ions and modifications, and ensuring clarity and alignment with ethical standards.

Gaslighting is an insidious and subtle form of workplace bullying characterized by emotional abuse and psychological manipulation which causes the person on the receiving end to question their beliefs, memories, or perceptions of reality. Gaslighting can lead to confusion, loss of confidence, uncertainty of one's mental stability, and negatively impact the workplace culture. Despite the negative impacts of gaslighting, some individuals tolerate the behavior for fear of losing their job, work identity, or financial security. When left unaddressed, gaslighting can cause targets to second guess or question their reality, ruminate about past conversations, or blame themselves for ongoing conflicts. During this webinar, we'll talk about what gaslighting is, how it shows up in nursing schools, and what we can do about it.
Objectives:
- Describe gaslighting behavior and its effects.
- Identify 1-2 examples of gaslighting behavior occurring in nursing academe.
- Implement 1-2 strategies to address the harmful effects of gaslighting behaviors.

Dr. Cynthia Clark is Founder of Civility Matters, Professor Emeritus at Boise State University, and an award-winning professor, scholar, and author. She serves as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the NLN Academy of Nursing Education, and co-chaired the American Nurses Association Professional Panel on Incivility, Bullying, and Workplace Violence. Dr. Clark is best known for her ground-breaking work on fostering civility and healthy work and learning environments around the globe. Her theory-driven interventions, empirical measurements, theoretical models, and reflective assessments provide best practices to prevent, measure, and address incivility to create healthy, productive workplaces.
Dr. Clark is the recipient of numerous teaching, service, and research awards and widely acclaimed for her engaging presentations. Her empirical assessments have been translated into 16 world languages and used by scholars in 32 countries on 5 continents. The 1st edition of Creating and Sustaining Civility in Nursing Education received 1st place honors as the 2013 AJN Book of the Year. The 2nd edition is available and the 3rd edition is underway. Federal Policies and Structural Inequities in American Indian Health

American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIAN) are the ‘unseen’ populations in the US. Americans know very little about the people Indigenous to North America, and it has been by design. The Health Professions education, research, and practice often rely on the asterisk as a placeholder in lieu of this missing information (Shotton, H., Lowe, S., & Waterman, S., 2023). This leaves the AIAN patient population with less than inadequate care and outcomes. Native faculty, staff, students, and patients can feel like they are ‘infiltrating’ institutions not designed for them or, in fact, designed in ways that constructively keep them out. The Future of Nursing reports were the seminal reports for the profession moving forward, with the first in 2010 being the most downloaded IOM (now NAM) report. The first Future of Nursing Report had two mentions of AIAN, and the current Report has less than one page focused on AIAN in a 500-page report. AIAN shares all the same issues, barriers, and systemic racism as other BIPOC groups, but as partially sovereign nations within the US, they have legal, geopolitical, and land-based issues none of the other groups have. To reach real solutions, there must be persistent, sustained, adequate, system-wide education on this very specific population for nursing and beyond.

- Recognize the impact of past and present federal legislation on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous communities.
- Describe the health disparities impacting American Indian and Alaska Native populations and their policy origins.
- Demonstrate best practices for allyship to Indigenous communities as a healthcare provider.

Dr. Margaret Moss is an enrolled member of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation in North Dakota. She is the first and only American Indian to hold both Nursing and Juris Doctorates. She has been a nurse for 35 years and an academic for 24 years across 4 universities including the University of Minnesota (twice) where she has returned as Professor in Nursing and Associate Dean of Nursing and Health Policy, Yale University, SUNY Buffalo and the University of British Columbia (UBC). Just prior she was at UBC 2018-2023, as a Professor, School of Nursing, Interim Associate Vice President Equity & Inclusion for the University, and Director of the UBC First Nations House of Learning, a strategic Indigenous leadership position under the Provost. She co-led the development and launch of the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan (2020) one of the only comprehensive plans in No. America. Dr. Moss was named to the inaugural Forbes 50 over 50 Impact List, 2021. She was elected to the American Academy of Nursing’s Board 2021 and has been elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) (2022). She sits on a Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. She has contributed to 2 NAM consensus studies- Federal Policy to Advance Racial, Ethnic, and Tribal Health Equity (2022), and currently The Use of Race and Ethnicity in Biomedical Research. Dr. Moss wrote an award-winning text, American Indian Health and Nursing (2015) followed by Health Equity and Nursing (2020). In other experiences, Dr. Moss was a RWJF Health Policy Fellow and staffed the Senate Special Committee on Aging. She was a Fulbright Research Chair at McGill University on Indigenous Life Across the North American Context. She is asked to speak often on Indigenous, health, aging, diversity and policy issues with academics, health professionals and other groups nationally and internat ionally.

A Strong Professional Identity in Nursing: Impact on Education and Practice

Understanding and embracing professional Identity in nursing offers new language and new knowledge for the journey—helping nurses heal, flourish, and expertly care for others. Research shows that nurses with a strong professional identity in nursing stand out as having a higher impact on patient outcomes than those who do not. Further, a strong professional identity allows nurse leaders to distinguish between their disciplinary core—the professional identity of nursing—and a variety of functional roles in which they may advance over time. Forming and fostering one’s professional identity are important to advance the nursing discipline.
Webinar speakers will share the contemporary language of professional identity in nursing, including definitions and examples of the four domains: values and ethics, knowledge, nurse as leader, and comportment. They will also share findings from US and international professional identity research and models for application/implementation in both education and practice settings.
Objectives:
- Explain how professional identity in nursing is different than professionalism.
- Discuss how the general definition of professional identity and using the four domains offer new language and knowledge to advance patient outcomes.
- Describe the impact that developing a strong professional identity in nursing can have on both nursing education and practice.

Susan Grant is Executive Vice President, Chief Experience Officer and Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) at Wellstar Health System, a nine-hospital health system headquartered in Marietta, Ga. Grant has operated in healthcare for over 30 years.
Her wealth of experience in various roles, such as executive vice president and chief nursing officer at Beaumont Health in Detroit, MI and Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, GA have led to achievements, including leading the nursing practice of over 10,000 nurses across all care settings and overseeing successful Magnet designation and redesignation of 8 different hospitals. She has spoken nationally and internationally and published on patient safety and patient and family-centered care. Grant is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and received her Bachelors degree in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia, Masters degree in Nursing from the University of South Carolina and Doctor of Nursing Practice from Vanderbilt University.

Lindell Joseph has a passion for advancing nursing leadership and innovativeness through thought leadership, research methods, and extensive publications.
She is currently a Distinguished Scholar in Nursing, a Clinical Professor, and the Director for DNP and MSN in Health Systems/Administration/Executive Leadership Programs at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. She co-leads the curriculum r edesign for both the undergraduate and graduate programs and recently served as a Councilor and Senator on the Faculty Senate. Dr. Joseph serves as a member of the International Society for Professional Identity in Nursing. Advisory Group. In that role, she co-led the development of the Conceptual Model for Professional Identity in Nursing and now chairs the committee, Nurse as Leader. She serves on the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) Foundation Board of Directors and co-leads the Nursing Leadership and System Science Council a collaboration between AONL Foundation and the Association for Leadership Science in Nursing. From 2016-2018 she was elected to the AONL Board of Directors and served on the American Hospital Association(AHA) Regional Policy Board for Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri, and Minnesota. She is both a fellow in both the American Academy of Nursing and the American Organization for Nursing Leadership.
Dr. Joseph’s areas of expertise are leadership effectiveness, innovativeness across academia-practice, and the General Effectiveness Multilevel Theory for Shared Governance (GEMS), the only theory-based program for share d governance implementation in nursing practice. In 2021, she co-published the book, Leadership, and Nursing Care Management.
Nelda Godfrey, PhD, ACNS-BC, RN, FAAN, ANEF

Nelda Godfrey is Professor and Associate Dean for Innovative Partnerships and Practice at the University of Kansas School of Nursing, Kansas City, KS. A thought leader in nursing innovation and nursing education, Dr. Godfrey writes often on new care delivery models that can be influenced by a stronger emphasis on the nurse within—researching and developing strategies to create the whole person experience in nursing practice going forward.
Her work with the International Society for Professional Identity in Nursing is transforming the way nurses, health care professionals and society understanding what it means to “think, act and feel like a nurse.” This work offers new language and new knowledge for the journey—helping nurses heal, flourish and expertly care for others. Dr. Godfrey received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri, her Masters in Nursing and credential as a Clinical Nurse Specialist from the University of Kansas Medical Center, and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Missouri. Scholarly accomplishments include seminal work in professional identity in nursing and implementing the AACN Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education. Programmatic achievements include creating the KU Community College Nursing Program (KUCCNP) in which community college students dually enroll in their community college and KU simultaneously, allowing them to graduate with an associate degree in nursing and a bachelor of science in nursing at the same time.
Dr. Godfrey currently serves as the chair for the American Nurses Association Ethics and Human Rights Advisory Board and is formerly one of two co-leads for the Missouri Action Coalition supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
