Faculty Policy Think Tank Report: Recommendations & Best Practices

Dr. Sharron Crowder is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Assistant to the Dean for Health Policy Initiatives at Indiana University School of Nursing (IUSON). She has held nursing positions in a variety of clinical and academic settings in the United States and abroad. Her teaching expertise is in health policy and advocacy as well as leadership. She is known for her use of innovative strategies in academic settings, development of community engaged learning opportunities, creation of legislative fellowships, and advancement of academic-practice health policy collaborations. Dr. Crowder uses her previous research focus on asthma, child and adolescent health, and chronic disease management as a foundation for many of her advocacy endeavors.

Sharron Crowder is committed to providing experiential learning opportunities and empowering nurses through mentorship. In 2014, she collaborated with State Representative Edward Clere and IU Government Relations to create an IUSON Legislative Fellowship. As of 2018, 7 students have completed the fellowship. In 2014, Dr. Crowder established "The Eagles" program for IUSON students in legislative fellowships, policy and advocacy practicums, and health policy independent studies. It is unique in offering long-term mentoring for students both during their programs of study and after graduation. Currently 26 Eagles are serving in a wide array of health policy and advocacy roles.

Dr. Crowder earned her BSN from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, MN from Emory University, and PhD from Indiana University. She was a 2014 AACN Faculty Policy Intensive Fellow. Her teaching and health policy leadership have been recognized through honors and awards. Dr. Crowder has served in many state and national leadership roles and has current appointments to the AACN Health Policy Advisory Committee, American Thoracic Society's Health Policy Committee, and AcademyHealth Committee on Advocacy and Public Policy.

Dr. Norma Martinez Rogers has served University of Texas Health San Antonio School of Nursing with distinction for 19 years where she is currently a Professor- Tenured. She is a member of the graduate faculty. She earned her PhD in "Cultural Foundations" from the University of Texas at Austin and two postdoctoral fellowships at the Indiana University School of Nursing. She is regarded as one of the most influential Latino nurses having served as a consultant and adviser on local, state, and national levels. In 2006 she was inducted into the Fellows of the American Academy of Nurses, which is the highest honor in nursing. She served on panels at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in which she has presented with U. S. Congresswomen/Congressmen. She served two terms as a commissioner and national adviser of the Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program {CHIP} Payment and Access Commission to review Medicaid and CHIP access policies. She has received numerous honors and awards to name a few, 2017 Champion of Cultural Diversity and Inclusion for Nurse Educator: American Association of Colleges of Nursing by the Nurse.com/Gannett Foundation, and the Excellence in Education Award: Received from Mexican American Unity Council. In 2013, she founded the Cultural Inclusion Institute, which convenes annual conferences focused on cultural inclusivity and social justice among the U. S. and global populations. She is the founder and current president of the International Association of Latino Nurse Faculty whose mission is to support and promote the professional growth of Latino nursing faculty.
