Community Advocacy Pecha Kucha
Overview
The Pecha Kucha assignment involves students choosing a clinical indicator from the Healthy North Texas website, exploring its impact on a community's health, and proposing solutions. This task prompts students to analyse a specific healthcare concern, its wider implications, and devise strategies to improve the overall well-being of the community members affected.
* Although the Healthy North Texas and its community-based outcomes reporting is unique to the north Texas area, they reflect nationally available outcomes. Therefore, the associated knowledge attained is transferable to non-Texas areas.
How to Use
Pecha Kucha is a Japanese word for “chit chat” (Pecha Kucha, n.d.). For this assignment, students will find a clinical indicator of their choosing on the Healthy North Texas website, and create a PowerPoint video that has 20 slides (along with 20 seconds of commentary per slide) to present at a "town hall meeting" on a classroom discussion board. The presentation should be visually compelling because the student’s goal is to persuade the town hall members that this concern is a priority that needs to be addressed. Students can review www.findhelp.org, or other resources from other communities, on how they resolved the selected issue/indicator. Students will submit their PowerPoint video presentation to the classroom discussion board for “town hall meeting” assignment for their peers to review. The class will briefly comment or "vote" on which classmate had the most persuasive presentation/highest priority concern that needs to be addressed within the discussion board town hall meeting. Each student’s presentation will be about 6 minutes and 40 seconds in length.

Steps to Complete the Assignment:
- Go to the Healthy North Texas website to explore data within a community dashboard on a clinical indicator of your choosing, for your area of interest (for example: adults with strokes). Find a community (zip code, county, or town) which has a higher-than-average problem with this indicator. Your job will be to advocate for the citizens in this town (specific to the clinical indicator) and offer possible solutions that the town might consider.
- After obtaining the necessary data and statistics on the selected clinical indicator, you will create a narrated PowerPoint presentation with 20 slides of content with 20 seconds of commentary per slide using this PowerPoint template.
- There should be at least three (3) additional slides:
a. The first slide should include the title/topic of the presentation and the name of the student/presenter.
b. The slide immediately following the content, but, before your references, it should contain your (student’s) contact information.
c. References (ensure they are in APA format) should be included after the contact information slide.
- The 20 content slides should analyse a health problem in the community that poses a problem.
a. Four (4) slides should describe the issue and data (describe the problem to be addressed using statistics form the Healthy North Texas website, a statement on what needs to be implemented or changed, and the recommendation for action).
b. Four (4) slides should describe the problem (statement of the problem/issue [history/status], an overview of the causes of the problem, and statement of policy implication of the problem establishing its importance and impact of the issue).
c. Four (4) slides should describe the evidence (APRN role, and socioeconomic effect on health delivery).
d. Four (4) slides should discuss options (overview of options, the argument of why/how the current approach is failing, and possible other solutions from other communities which have experienced a similar problem).
e. Four (4) slides should describe policy recommendations (outline specific steps or measures to be implemented, and a closing paragraph to re-emphasize the importance of action).
- You will then use the “Record Slide Show” feature in PowerPoint, which is located on the Slide Show tab. Then, you can file-> export--> create a video. You will upload this video onto the "town hall meeting" discussion board in the online classroom.
- You will briefly comment / "vote" as a community/ class on who has the highest priority clinical issue that needs to be addressed (and explain your rationale). Include at least 2 APA formatted references in your discussion post/vote.
Integrative Learning Strategies
Research Thoroughly: Encourage students to delve deep into the chosen clinical indicator. They should gather data, statistics, and scholarly articles to comprehend the problem in a holistic way.
Understand Community Dynamics: Advise students to grasp the community's demographics, socio-economic status, cultural nuances, and existing healthcare infrastructure. This understanding will shape their proposed solutions.
Visual Representation: Emphasize the importance of concise visual aids in a Pecha Kucha presentation. Encourage them to use images, infographics, or concise slides to support their points effectively.
Structured Approach: Guide them to structure their presentation logically using the provided template. It could begin with the identification of the clinical indicator, followed by its impact on the community, underlying causes, and conclude with actionable solutions.
Engage Audience Interest: Remind students that Pecha Kucha involves short, impactful presentations. Encourage them to keep the audience engaged through storytelling, compelling data, or real-life examples.
Solution-Oriented: Encourage a focus on feasible and realistic solutions. Students should consider both short-term and long-term strategies, considering the community's resources and constraints.
Practice and Timing: Since Pecha Kucha has a strict time limit (20 slides, 20 seconds each), emphasize the importance of practicing their (the student’s) presentation to ensure they effectively convey their message within the time constraints.
Clear Call to Action: Encourage students to conclude with a clear call to action. Whether it's proposing community interventions, policy changes, or healthcare initiatives, a compelling call to action can leave a lasting impact.
Peer Review and Feedback: Encourage students to critically analyse their peers’ presentations and critique professionally and appropriately.
