Before you apply, please read and consider the following FAQs.
1. If I have previously received funding in past years, may I apply for the current application cycle?
If your school participated in previous funded years, your school is unfortunately ineligible. If your school applied before and was not selected for either cycle, you may submit an application for the current funding cycle. See previously awarded White Coat Ceremony Recipients page.
2. Is the ceremony limited to undergraduate nursing students?
While the Nursing White Coat Ceremony is mainly intended for traditional BSN students, ceremonies for nursing students in other programs (RN to BSN, entry-level MSN, accelerated BSN, DNP, etc.) are also welcome. A variety of nursing students have participated in previous programs. Please indicate your students on the application and it will be considered with the submissions.
3. When will I be notified if my school is accepted or not?
Schools will be notified of their status no later than July 13. Additionally, selected schools will have until July 31 to confirm their participation.
4. If selected, when will my school have to host its White Coat Ceremony?
Recipients of this cycle of funding are expected to host their White Coat Ceremony prior to December 31. However, cohorts that begin in Spring will also be considered on a special request basis.
5. If selected, how will my school receive funding?
For the 2016 program, 50 selected schools will each receive $1,000 to conduct their White Coat Ceremony. AACN’s colleagues from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation will process grant agreements and payment. Receipts for expenditures will not be required as funds will be distributed as a one-time grant disbursement. Additional information and other reporting requirements will be provided to each school once the selection process has been completed.
6. If selected, what is required of my institution?
Your institution will be responsible for hosting a Nursing White Coat Ceremony for new nursing students. The White Coat Ceremony typically features the recitation of an oath, receipt of a commemorative pin, an address by an eminent role model, and a reception for students and invited guests. The Nursing White Coat Ceremony events could also include a welcome by the dean, the president of an affiliated hospital, or other respected leader who represents the value system of the school and the profession the students are about to enter. More details about the White Coat Ceremony planning process are available here.
7. If selected, are my students required to recite a specific oath?
Selected schools are encouraged to recite or to customize the sample oath. However, several schools have even allowed their students to write their own oaths.
8. When is the deadline to apply?
All applications must be received by 12:00 pm (ET) on July 1.
