CNL Certification Renewal

CNL Renewal Requirements

Please review the CNL Renewal Guidelines prior to submitting your application.

For CNL certification renewal, you must log into your MyCNC Profile and complete the CNL Renewal Application and submit payment. The following information will be required within the renewal application:

  • Provide your current RN License number, state and expiration date
  • Comply with the Standards of Conduct
  • List employment history within the 5 year CNL certification period (2,000 hours of professional practice). Job title listed as “Clinical Nurse Leader” is not required to renew.
  • List 50 contact hours earned within the 5 year CNL certification period. Hours used to renew your RN license will be accepted. Review the Ways to Earn CEUs.
    Note: If audited by CNC, you must submit documentation of contact hours earned.

 

Renewal

The initial CNL certification is granted for a period of five years. Certification must be renewed prior to the expiration date on one’s certificate. Submission one month prior to the expiration date is highly recommended. Certification renewal assures the public that the certified CNL continues to maintain current and relevant knowledge of the CNL role. NOTE: Retesting is not required. A CNL job title not required for renewal.

Late Application Fee

If you submit your renewal application after the December 31st deadline and on or before June 30th, you are required to pay the late renewal. (Example: It’s February 1, 2022 and your certification expired on December 31, 2021. You can still submit the renewal late fee until June 30, 2022.)

Reinstatement

You are required to pay the reinstatement fee if you submit your renewal application between 6-11 months after the December 31st deadline (July 1 – December 31 of following year). (Example: It is July 1, 2022 and your certification expiration date was December 31, 2021. Submission of the reinstatement fee is an available option until December 31, 22.)

Re-Testing

Applying to take the exam as an initial candidate is required if your certification has been expired for a minimum of 12 months. Those who expire will have their CNL status marked as lapsed. (Example: Your certification expired on December 31, 2020 and it’s now February 1, 2022. Your option to reinstate ended on December 31, 2021. You will have to submit an online application with initial exam fee along with all required documents.
