New Careers in Nursing (NCIN) Overview

New Careers in Nursing (NCIN) was a national scholarship program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and AACN. Founded in 2008 to help alleviate the nursing shortage and increase the diversity of nursing professionals, NCIN awarded its final grants in 2015 to schools with accelerated baccalaureate and master’s degree nursing programs. In total, grants have provided scholarships to 3,517 students at 130 unique schools of nursing

NCIN Outcomes

We accomplished extraordinary outcomes with the NCIN program and the 3,517 diverse scholars who have entered the nursing workforce. We are proud of the many accomplishments over the seven years of the program. This book includes a profile of each of the 130 schools of nursing that were funded by the NCIN program. It also highlights some exemplary NCIN scholars who wrote essays based on their nursing experience.

NCIN Evaluation Surveys

Educational Testing Service (ETS) conducted the external evaluation of the NCIN program from 2009 to 2015. Phase II of the evaluation had three primary foci: (1) the post ABSN or AMSN experiences of NCIN scholars, (2) the experiences of faculty and students in the teaching and learning components of the ABSN or AMSN programs and (3) the changes in nursing school culture as a result of the NCIN program implementation. These publications can be found where other ETS publications are stored.
