In the January 2019 issue of Health Affairs, Mr. Stephen Isaacs, Dr. Paul Jellinek, and Dr. Terry Fulmer published a new article on “The John A. Hartford Foundation [JAHF] and the Growth of Geriatrics.” The authors explore the impact JAHF has had on improving the care of older adults through a focus on health professional education. JAHF’s work with AACN to develop core competencies for geriatric nursing care is highlighted in this piece.
 
On December 20, Becker’s Hospital Review showcased an exciting new development in AACN’s work with Vizient to offer nurse residency programs in an article titled “NYC launches 1st city-led nurse residency program in the US.” Through this collaboration, 24 hospitals in New York City will offer more than 500 new nurses the opportunity to participate in a year-long program designed to improve their transition from nursing school to the workplace. This first-of-its-kind program is offered through a partnership involving the Greater New York Hospital Association, NYU Langone Health, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Washington Weekly

Inside this edition of Washington Weekly: On January 2-3, AACN Board Chair Dr. Ann Cary and President and CEO Dr. Deborah Trautman celebrated the commencement of the 116th Congress on Capitol Hill. These AACN leaders met with over 35 Members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle, to share the importance of advancing health care and higher education.

New Partnerships & Grant-funded Initiatives 

  • The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing received a four-year, $2.8 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services to back the project “Building a Resilient Primary Care Registered Nurse Workforce for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control in Alabama.” The Nurse Education, Practice, Quality, and Retention grant will help improve health outcomes in medically underserved areas in Alabama and educate undergraduate nursing students and practicing registered nurses in team-focused primary care.   • The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) will receive the largest grant ever given by the Rita & Alex Hillman Foundation to a single nurse-driven innovation. The five-year, $3 million grant will fund large-scale, national implementation of JHSON’s Community Aging in Place Advancing Better Living for Elders (CAPABLE) program. The award allows the potential for millions of lower-income older adults to improve function, lesson disability, and age in the comfort of their homes. Read more >>
     
  • With a ribbon-cutting ceremony held last November, the Mercy Health Partners Primary Care Center is a collaboration among Grand Valley State University’s Kirkhof College of Nursing (MI), Muskegon Community College (MCC), and Mercy Health. The center contains eight exam rooms, a treatment room, and a lab, and will provide Grand Valley nursing students and MCC's nursing, medical assistant, and respiratory therapy students with opportunities for clinical experiences.
