Rounds with Leadership: Bridging the Distance

Since February 2020, AACN’s priorities have focused on assisting member schools with maintaining their nursing education programs and advancing their missions despite the many challenges presented by the pandemic. We have provided guidance in the form of program guidelines, content-rich webinars, collaborative statements, and curated resources prepared by expert authorities. Chief among our priorities has been the desire to maintain a strong connection with our membership at a time when virtual meetings and physical distancing has become the norm.
In an effort to engage directly with member deans on issues of great concern, we welcomed the opportunity to host four Like-School Discussion Forums in June to hear directly from academic leaders about their concerns, operational strategies, and success stories.

In the July 10, 2020 issue of the Pittsburgh Business Times, Dr. Mary Ellen Smith Glasgow, dean of the Duquesne University School of Nursing, published an opinion piece titled Smith Glasgow's Viewpoint: How Will Nursing Education Change? Considering the lasting impact the pandemic will have on how we prepare future nurses, Dr. Glasgow calls for a greater emphasis on public health nursing content, disaster triage, ethics, coping with stress and trauma, and patient advocacy.
In the July/August 2020 issue of Nurs e Educator, Dr. Cynthia Clark from ATI Nursing Education contributed a guest editorial titled The Imperative of Civility in Uncertain Times. Dr. Clark considers the pivotal role nurse leaders play in fostering civility by setting a compelling vision and a positive course for the future. “In a climate of uncertainty and unpredictability, having all members of the academic community recommit to collegiality and civility is more important than ever.”
