The Resilient Nurses Initiative of Maryland, led by Dr. Cynda Rushton with Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, recently released a report titled Mind the Gap: Preparing Nurses to Practice with Resilience & Integrity. In partnership with WikiWisdom, the author solicited feedback from 270 nurses, students, and faculty about how they are caring for themselves and how they believe nursing education must change to meet the demands of the future. The ideas collected are distilled into five recommendations focused on modernizing curriculum, making education more like real life, expanding support systems, strengthening connections between students and nurses, and supporting the whole student.
On June 20, 2021, Nursing Outlook published an article in press titled A National Survey of the Impact of COVID-19 on Personal, Academic, and Work Environments of Nursing Students. Dr. Thomas Kippenbrock from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and colleagues conducted this study to assess the impact of the pandemic on students and their perceived quality of learning. Among the findings, students reported a decline in education quality given the quick pivot to online learning and limited clinical experiences. Many students reported feeling underprepared for professional practice and licensure/certification exams.

The National Academy of Medicine will host a four-part webinar series exploring the blueprint for nursing’s next decade outlined in The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity. The series will cover strategies nurses can employ to improve health outcomes, the roots of racial inequity, lifting barriers to nurses’ full practice authority, addressing nurses’ well-being, and diversifying the nursing workforce.
