On September 16, 2021, Dr. Victoria Niederhauser, dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Knoxville and member of the AACN Board of Directors, contributed a guest column to Knox News titled Building a Resilient Nursing Workforce. With depression, burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress among healthcare professionals at an all-time high, Dr. Niederhauser discusses the importance of including self-care in nursing education and offers tips to nurses and other care providers on reducing stress and cultivating resilience.
On October 6, 2021, Dr. Heide Cygan and colleagues from the Rush University College of Nursing published a new study in Public Health Nursing titled Impact of COVID-19 on Public Health Nursing Student Learning Outcomes. The authors compare student learning outcomes in a pre-licensure public health nursing course before, during, and after the transition to remote learning. Strategies that support consistent academic outcomes and future research on the impact of the pandemic are suggested.

The George Washington University School of Nursing brought together experts as part of a bicentennial signature event to discuss the transformative role nursing education can play in making health care more equitable and reflective of the communities they serve. The panelists included national nursing leaders (including AACN President and CEO Deborah Trautman) and committee members who produced The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report, published by the National Academy of Medicine in May.

The California State Fullerton School of Nursing received a four-year, $2.2 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to bolster efforts to increase diversity among students, faculty, and staff. The grant, called ENGAGE (Encouraging Nurse Guidance and Governance for Equity), will involve every aspect of the nursing program, including student and faculty recruitment and supporting diverse students throughout the program. University at Buffalo School of Nursing researchers will explore how to address disparities in alcohol and drug abuse among sexual minority youth, thanks to a five-year, $2.5 million grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Read more >>

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing (VCU) is participating in a research project studying the long-term effects of COVID-19 in children. The school is part a nationwide study funded by the National Institutes of Health and joins forces with Rhode Island’s Hasbro Children’s Hospital, New York University Langone Health, Northeastern University, and the Translational Genomics Research Institute. The University of South Alabama College of Nursing (USA) received a $1.9 million grant from HRSA to support the advancement of diversity in the nursing field. The grant will fund a new initiative known as the EMPOWER project, which will serve two purposes: 1) advance USA’s goal of educating a more diverse nursing workforce and 2) reduce health disparities in underserved communities.
