On October 18, 2021, Dr. Karen Cox, president of Chamberlain University, published an opinion piece in Inside Higher Ed titled Holistic Admissions Is Just a Start. Given our nation’s demographics and existing gaps in education access and equity, Dr. Cox argues for higher education institutions to consider new ways of assessing and supporting student success, including holistic admission review. She recognizes that increasing student diversity demands “an investment in people and internal organizational cultures that requires looking beyond admissions tests.”

On October 6, Dr. Dawn Aycock from Georgia State University and her colleagues published an article in Nursing Outlook titled Black Nurse Scientists and the Undeniable Role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Due to the insufficient number of Black nurses engaged in the advancement of nurse science, the authors consider the role HBCUs can play in creating new leaders in health inequities research. Challenges and strategies for promoting research careers at HBCUs to attract Black nurse scientists are considered.

The Essentials and Primary Palliative Care Education
in Nursing Education

In the September/October issue of Syllabus, the teaching tools developed by the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) are considered in light of the new competency expectations. The Essentials identify hospice/palliative/supportive care across the lifespan and with diverse populations as one of the four spheres of care critical to nursing practice. To support the efforts of schools moving to enhance and standardize their palliative care education, ELNEC is providing free access to its entry- and advance-level curriculum for review. Contact elnec@coh.org to request access.
