Weekly Digest
In the November/December 2021 issue of Nurse Educator, Dr. Shannon Idzik from the University of Maryland School of Nursing and fellow leaders with the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) explore Strategies to Move Entry-Level Nurse Practitioner Education to the Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree by 2025. NONPF is committed to moving all entry-level nurse practitioner education to the DNP by 2025. The article describes NONPF’s efforts to lead this transition, which has included convening a national summit with leaders representing nursing licensure, accreditation, certification, education, and practice, and creating workgroups to address issues connected to education, outcomes, capacity, and messaging. Ongoing collaboration, including engagement with practice partners, is critical to facilitating this evolution in NP education.

On November 4, 2021, Inside Higher Ed reporter Sara Weissman published an article titled Struggling to Fill a Dangerous and Growing Labor Gap. Despite strong interest in nursing careers, the nursing shortage continues to threaten hospitals and other care settings. Given the need to produce more nurses, the article examines how some colleges and universities are having difficulty expanding their nursing programs due to limited funds, faculty, and space.
