On December 10, 2021, The Hill published an opinion piece from two nurse educators - Dr. Elizabeth Simkus from Rush University and Dr. Gia Merlo from New York University - titled Your Mask Comes First: Nurses Overwhelmed by COVID Need Support. With nurses reporting high levels of burnout, stress, and depression, the authors recommend integrating lifestyle medicine into nursing curricula to address these health concerns. “Lifestyle medicine is an evidenced-based practice focusing on guiding behavior changes in diet, physical activity, sleep, stress management, tobacco/alcohol/drug use and social connections.” The new AACN Essentials is cited as a mechanism to facilitate needed change.
On December 6, 2021, the Journal of Professional Nursing published a guest editorial in press from Dr. Angela Brittain from Washington State University titled Is Resilience Training the Answer to Burnout? The author calls for a stronger focus on creating better work environments for nurses as a means of addressing burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral injury. To improve the faculty work environment, Dr. Brittain identified the need for better communication, greater collaboration, and the integration of transformational leadership models. |

New Resources Available
The Essentials Implementation Tool Kit is a continuously evolving resource designed to assist faculty in implementing the new standards. Faculty have created several curriculum mapping tools to help schools align their programs with the new competency expectations. The new tools are posted online. In addition, a presentation given by three AACN leaders - Dr. Jerry Mansfield, Mount Carmel Health System; Dr. Cynthia McCurren, University of Michigan-Flint; and Dr. John McFadden, Barry University - for the Mayo Clinic earlier this fall is now accessible online. The presentation is titled The Re-Envisioned AACN Essentials: What Lies Ahead?

- Registration is open for the Commission on Nurse Certification’s 2022 CNL Research Symposium – The CNL Role: Imperative During a Public Crisis, February 17, 2022, at the Hilton Lake Buena Vista in Orlando, FL (virtual registration is also available). The symposium is the pre-conference session for the CNL Summit – A Contemporary Look at the CNL: Leadership and Versatility, February 17-19, 2022 (separate registration is required).
- Following a yearlong revision, the 2021 Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals are now available. Adopted by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, the newly revised core competencies describe crosscutting or foundational knowledge and skills for all public health professionals. Learn more and access the latest version of this key workforce development resource.
- The Health Resources & Services Administration’s (HRSA) Nurse Education, Practice, Quality and Retention-Mobile Health Training Program aims to strengthen the capacity of nursing students to address and manage social determinants of health and improve health equity for vulnerable populations in rural and underserved areas. The program’s objective is to expand nursing education by emphasizing leadership and effective communication skills as well as innovative technological methods to deliver quality care in a rural or underserved environment. HRSA will award approximately $35 million to 35 recipients. Join the technical assistance webinar on January 20, 2022, 2:00-4:00 pm (ET). Deadline to apply is February 22, 2022.
- HRSA’s Nurse Faculty Loan Program provides funding to accredited schools of nursing to establish and operate a student loan fund and provide loans to students enrolled in advanced education nursing degree programs who are committed to becoming nurse faculty. In exchange for completion of up to 4 years of post-graduation full-time nurse faculty employment in an accredited school of nursing, the program authorizes cancellation of up to 85% of the original student loan amount. HRSA will award up to 80 grantees a total of approximately $26.5 million to support training of advanced education nursing students who will serve as nurse faculty upon graduation, with a focus on doctorate preparation. Deadline to apply is January 13, 2022.
- The American Psychological Association’s Leadership and Education Advancement Program (LEAP) for Diverse Scholars is an evidence-informed, distance-learning mentoring and leadership development program for early career social and behavioral scientists from underrepresented racial and ethnic populations whose research aligns with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases mission but who have not yet received R01 funding nor have ascended to a leadership position in their respective disciplines or professional associations. Deadline to apply is May 30, 2022.
- A Call for Abstracts has been announced for The Ohio State University’s Third Biennial National Summit on Promoting Well-being and Resilience in Healthcare Professionals. Share your successes in one of these categories: reducing burnout and enhancing mental well-being in clinicians, faculty, or students; organizational and system-wide initiatives to enhance workplace wellness cultures and solve system-wide issues leading to burnout; innovations to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors in health sciences students/faculty; and innovations to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors in healthcare professionals. Submission deadline is January 28, 2022.
- In March 2021, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched the UNITE initiative to address structural racism in the biomedical research enterprise. Through this initiative, NIH is holding a series of listening sessions to learn from external stakeholders about the full range of issues and challenges in advancing racial and ethnic equity in the biomedical research enterprise. The insights shared during these listening sessions will help to identify priorities for UNITE and inform the development of an NIH action plan.
- Project ECHO® on Racism in Nursing Series aims to examine the impact of racism on nurses, patients, communities, and healthcare systems and to motivate all nurses to confront systemic racism. Through ECHO®, the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing is offering eight free one-hour tele-mentoring sessions that connect nurses with subject matter experts using brief lectures, case-based learning, and discussion. The series launches in March 2022.
