Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: Understanding Bias and Racism's
Impact on Health

By Michelle DeCoux Hampton, PhD, MS, RN, College of Health and Human Sciences Special Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Associate Professor in The Valley Foundation School of Nursing at San Jose State University

Isabel Wilkerson’s New York Times bestseller and Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, explores the relationship between the United States caste system on inequities in housing, education, employment, and voting for Black Americans. Understanding this relationship and its impact on health can inform nursing education and practice to improve service delivery for underserved communities.

Caste, “an artificial…fixed and embedded ranking of human value that sets the presumed supremacy of one group against the presumed inferiority of other groups…” (p. 17), consists of 8 pillars that contribute to increased morbidity and mortality among Black Americans and other underserved communities. Click here to read about each pillar, provides a recent exemplar, and discusses its health impact.

AACN's Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability in Nursing Education Lectureship Award - Apply Now!

AACN is currently accepting applications for the 2023 Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability in Nursing Education Lectureship Award. Annual awards may be made to one school in each of the following categories: Public Colleges/Universities, Private Colleges/Universities, Small Liberal Arts Colleges, and Academic Health Centers.

Diversity is defined as individual attributes that extend beyond race, age, and gender to also include, but are not limited to, characteristics such as national origin, immigrant status, language, color, disability, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, veteran status, and family structure. Inclusion is defined as a culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility, and fairness, as well as leverages diversity so that all individuals can participate and contribute to their full potential. An inclusive environment must be created for diversity to flourish. Sustainability occurs when structures and strategies are in place to manage diversity and institutionalize a culture of inclusion. Visit the AACN website to see the full criteria, application, and submission process, or click the button below. The application deadline is January 13, 2023.

AACN Conducting DEI Member Needs Survey

AACN is currently soliciting responses from member schools for our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Member Needs Survey. This survey aims to compile a baseline understanding of DEI awareness, programming, and initiatives for your students, staff, faculty, administrators. We've received a robust response, and look forward to receiving additional feedback.
Volunteer Schools Needed: AACN's Culture and Climate Survey

Another great way to connect with AACN is to consider volunteering to serve as a pilot school to test a new online platform developed to support our Leading Across Multidimensional Perspectives (LAMP©) Culture and Climate Survey. This tool gives academic administrators a better understanding of how their learning environment influences student experiences and achievement. With assessment data collected from students, faculty, administrators, and staff, schools are equipped with valuable information needed to initiate change, target areas of growth, and most importantly, improve student outcomes.

To test the new platform created for the LAMP© survey, AACN is currently seeking schools to be among the first to use this new resource. All types of institutions are encouraged to apply, including small schools, public and private universities, academic health centers, liberal arts schools, and colleges located in rural and urban areas. Schools wishing to participate must complete a brief online form.

For more information, please contact AACN’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion staff.

In August 2021, AACN released the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Faculty Tool Kit. This resource helps schools of nursing expand the capacity of faculty to grow personally and professionally and recognize challenges, barriers, and opportunities to promote inclusive academic excellence.

The DEI Faculty Tool Kit is designed to:
  • Align the dimensions of the Inclusive Excellence Ecosystem for Academic Nursing to assist nursing schools with organizing and guiding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.
  • Inform nursing schools of promising practices and strategies for promoting DEI and fostering inclusive excellence.

  • Assist faculty with promoting and welcoming academic environments that embrace diverse life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.

  • Serve as a catalyst for reflection and assessment of current pedagogy, teaching methods, and curricular strategies for inclusive teaching and learning environments.
