Interest in ELNEC Curricula Continues to Climb

Published July 20, 2022

The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), a collaborative effort between AACN and the City of Hope to improve palliative care, would like to share the following updates:

Interest in the ELNEC Undergraduate/New Graduate and ELNEC Graduate Curriculum

We are pleased to report that interest in the ELNEC curricula continues to climb. Since spring 2022, there has been a nearly 20% increase in requests for the Undergraduate/New Graduate curriculum and just under 10% for ELNEC Graduate. Schools of nursing have been reviewing AACN’s The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education and recognize the value of these educational resources to advance palliative care education using evidence-based, standardized materials. As a reminder, for those not yet using these modules, we are able to provide free access to the curricula to review. Contact elnec@coh.org to request access.

If you are not familiar, the ELNEC Undergraduate/New Graduate and ELNEC Graduate online programs provide state-of-the-art primary palliative care education. Six one-hour modules prepare students with the foundational education needed to care for seriously ill patients and families. These modules align with the 2022 AACN Essentials in the area of primary palliative competencies for undergraduate and graduate nursing students.

Faculty Discount for Fall ELNEC Training

Many faculty may be interested in enhancing their own palliative care knowledge. ELNEC is holding a Summit in Oak Brook, IL, October 20-21, 2022, which will include sessions focused on ELNEC Core and ELNEC APRN Adult. We are offering a $100 registration discount to nursing faculty. Attending this 2-day conference will give you tools for the classroom, but also prepare you to train others and hold workshops for interested faculty.  In Chicago, we’ll be hosting a networking session specifically for nursing faculty as well as lunch-time breakouts to address competency-based evaluation of student learning. Register here.

Preparing for the Fall Semester: Primary Palliative Care Resources from ELNEC

To further support faculty we have developed a new feature on the website – ELNEC Schools of Nursing Faculty Corner.  Faculty Spotlights feature the excellent and creative work provided by passionate nursing faculty. The overarching goal of this Cambia Health-funded work is to stimulate ideas, network, collaborate, and move forward in advancing palliative care in nursing education and ultimately improve the care of patients with serious illnesses and families.  Upcoming free webinars will be posted on this website. Examples of past webinars include:

In addition, Dr. Andra Davis, University of Portland, and Dr. Megan Lippe, UT Health, San Antonio, developed two tools to measure the outcomes of palliative care education:  Undergraduate Nursing Palliative Care Knowledge Survey (UNPCKS) and The Primary Palliative Nursing Care-Competence Assessment Tool (PPNC-CAT).  Email pallcareed@up.edu for more information on these new tools.

For faculty interested in more information or not familiar with the AACN CARES and G-CARES competencies, please visit the website or contact Dr. Andra Davis, associate professor, University of Portland, and ELNEC project co-investigator.

Stay tuned to www.aacnnursing.org/ELNEC for updates in the Fall!
