In Peering into the Post-COVID Nursing Curriculum, an August 15 blog entry on the Daily Nurse website, writer Louis Pilla delivers insight from Dr. Mary Dolansky, professor at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, on the landscape for nursing education after COVID. According to Dr. Dolansky, nurse educators could see changes related to instruction on telehealth, an emphasis on systems thinking, stress on leadership, and a focus on innovation and design thinking. She also notes that AACN’s Essentials has created momentum and drive for competency-based education.

In the August 2022 issue of Journal of Nursing Education, Dr. Laura Reed and colleagues from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing have published Rethinking Nursing Education and Curriculum Using a Racial Equity Lens. The authors discuss the continuing process of dismantling racism and the need for academic institutions to acknowledge how systemic and structural racism are direct contributors to the rise in maternal and infant mortality in the United States.

The Essential Update: The Latest on AACN's New Essentials
Council on Accreditation Releases Crosswalk to Essentials for
CRNA Programs

The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) has developed a crosswalk of their Standards for Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs – Practice Doctorate to the new AACN Essentials. COA is encouraging Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) programs to meet the new Essentials and use this tool in their work toward curriculum redesign. If a CRNA program chooses to complete this crosswalk, COA recommends mapping curriculum to the Advanced Level sub-competencies outlined in the Essentials to ensure that programs are mapped to all Domains, Competencies, and Concepts.

COA has developed a list of frequently asked questions related to the crosswalk.
