Creating and Sustaining a Culture of Excellence in Nursing Education

October 27-28, 2023

This annual event, held prior to ANLC in Washington, DC brings together OLN Members and other nursing academic leaders with broad administrative responsibilities, including associate deans and assistant deans to connect and network, develop leadership strategies, share practical exemplars, and much more.

Who Should Attend:

OLN Members as well as associate deans/directors attending the Academic Nursing Leadership Conference.

How to Attend:

The OLN Program is offered as an in-person event prior to the Academic Nursing Leadership Conference.

Organizational Leadership Network (OLN) Program

You may substitute your registration to another individual within your organization.
If a substitution is not possible, you can cancel your attendance up until October 14, 2023 to obtain a refund minus a $50 non-refundable administrative fee.
No refunds will be given after October 14, 2023 nor will refunds be given for no-shows.
Your cancellation request must be submitted in writing to conferences@aacnnursing.org and confirmed by AACN.

Please note: AACN will issue refunds within a 2-week time period of receipt of written cancellation notice.

Event Cancellation by AACN

AACN reserves the right to modify, postpone/reschedule or cancel this conference and any related group activity for any circumstance beyond AACN's control, including but not limited to emergency, acts of God, government regulations, disaster, strike, and non-fulfilment of minimum group requirements. If AACN cancels an event, every attempt will be made to reschedule or provide a modified virtual offering, and registration fees will be applied to the rescheduled/virtual event. If a cancelled event cannot be rescheduled, AACN will issue a full refund of the registration fee(s). Any travel, lodging, or incidental expenses incurred related to a cancelled/postponed event cannot be refunded under any circumstances as AACN resumes no responsibility for such expenses.

Discuss strategies for mentoring faculty in leading students, guiding colleagues, and managing self.
Curate personal strategies for creating a healthy academic environment to promote faculty and student success.

4:00-4:15 p.m.	Welcome Guest Speakers: Francine Parker, EdD, Auburn University College of Nursing Betty McLendon Fuller, Associate Professor Emeritus, Auburn, AL

4:15-5:00 p.m.	Exploring Self-Awareness Learn what is critical to your success as a leader Recognize that self – awareness/ exploration will not ‘just happen. We have self-reflection opportunities for students in our program; faculty and leaders should do the same; take inventory of personal values. From this can emerge areas where personal improvement is needed. Understand that reflection and improvement must be thoughtful, continual, and deliberate over time – it is a process; not a one-step list to achieve and you are done. According to Brown and Naseer, who authored ‘Leadership Vertigo: Why Even the Best Leaders go off course and How they can get Back on Track’, many leadership deficiencies are linked to an inability to establish interpersonal relationships. If one lacks effective relationship skills, it will be a challenge to motivate and or empower your team. Establish clear boundaries to manage expectations and values for self, faculty, and your program.

5:00-6:00 p.m.	Healthy Academic Environment Culture Values in Action Character Strength Survey Leaders must put forth their best, before the best can be brought out of the team. Fostering a positive, healthy work environment is a win -win for faculty and students. Disaster Cookies and Conversation scenario—acknowledge my imperfection.

8:45-9:15 a.m.	Mentoring Faculty Checklist as way for new faculty to individually meet faculty and staff Assign vs self-select Multi-level mentoring Course mentor: facilitate orientation to the teaching role Outreach mentor: to assist with developing an outreach plan Scholarship: for research and scholarship program Mentor, a ‘Go-To’ colleague: a one-on-one relationship with faculty who will be available on a regular basis. Encourage both to journal the experience.

9:15-10:00 a.m.	Reframe, Revisit, Renew Professionalism Faculty creates definition and builds a community- what does professional identity mean and what does it look like? How do you want your graduates to represent your program? Introduce concept of professionalism early in program to students as expectation.

10:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m.	Overview of Scenarios and Group Discussion
