AACN Mourns the Loss of Dr. Lucy Marion, Former Dean at Augusta University

AACN is mourning the passing of Lucy N. Marion, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAANP, who passed away April 13, 2023, at the age of 76. With over 50 years of experience in nursing, Dr. Marion was a pioneer in nursing, as well as a dedicated educator, researcher, and advocate who touched the lives of countless people throughout her career, including many at AACN. She was a member of AACN’s Task Force on the Practice Doctorate in Nursing and attended many AACN conferences during her tenure as dean.

Dr. Marion received her BSN and MSN from the University of South Carolina and her PhD from the University of Illinois Chicago. She taught at the University of South Carolina from 1968 to 1993, and then returned to the University of Illinois Chicago to continue her career as a professor. In 2004, she became the dean of the college of nursing at the Medical College of Georgia (now Augusta University), where she remained until her retirement in 2020. Among her accomplishments, she spearheaded the development of a Doctor of Nursing Practice program at Augusta,  the first in the state when it opened in 2005.
