Congressional Committee Considers the Build Back Better Act, Advances Priorities Impacting Academic Nursing

WASHINGTON, DC – September 16, 2021 – The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) applauds the House Energy and Commerce Committee for including academic nursing priorities in their section of the Build Back Better Act, which is now advancing through the legislative process. AACN was pleased to see that the Committee supported $1 billion in funding for nursing education enhancement and modernization, which reflects the language outlined in the Future Advancement of Academic Nursing (FAAN) Act (H.R. 851/S.246).

“As we work to combat the pandemic, address social determinants of health, and prepare for future threats to achieving healthy equity, educating the nursing workforce must be a priority,” said Dr. Susan Bakewell-Sachs, Chair of the AACN Board of Directors. “Investment in our nursing schools, faculty, and students is imperative, and we applaud the Energy and Commerce Committee for recognizing these vital national resources in their proposed plan.”

In addition, the Committee recommends $300 million in supplemental funding for the Nurse Corps and $150 million in grants to grow and diversify the nursing workforce in maternal and perinatal health. Additional provisions that support maternal health, research and innovation, public health infrastructure, pandemic preparedness, and address healthcare risks associated with climate change also were included.

“Our public health infrastructure must be sustainable, responsive, and inclusive,” said Dr. Deborah Trautman, AACN President and Chief Executive Officer. “From research and scientific discovery, to creating a more equitable healthcare system, nursing is an essential part of that equation. We commend the Energy and Commerce Committee for recognizing the far-reaching importance of nursing.”

AACN gives special thanks to House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone (D-NJ-06) and members of the Committee for their continued commitment to nursing and recognition of the connection between nursing education and America’s health. As these recommendations for budget reconciliation advance to the House Budget Committee and through the legislative process, AACN remains committed to ensuring the Build Back Better Act includes strong and necessary investments in academic nursing and the future nursing workforce. We look forward to working with the House and Senate to ensure these meaningful and historic investments are ultimately signed into law.
