Fall Webinar Series Continues
Across the Curriculum: Innovative Approaches to Palliative and End-of-Life Nursing Education
December 9 at 12:00 p.m. (ET); 9:00 a.m. (PT)

This panel webinar will highlight how nursing programs are weaving palliative and end-of-life content throughout their curricula. Three faculty will share their approaches, outcomes, and lessons learned at their respective institutions:

Whitney Hicks (UNC Greensboro) will share findings on pre-licensure students’ lived experiences with palliative and end-of-life care education, exploring the importance of topic placement, clinical practice, and student support.

Bonnie Sarkinen (Washington State University) will provide an update on the second semester of ELNEC integration in a pre-licensure curriculum, including implementation strategies, competency-based outcomes, and lessons learned in building student confidence.

John Sponholtz (University of Wisconsin–Green Bay) will describe how palliative and hospice care are threaded through a Healthy Aging and Chronic Care Management course, featuring an unfolding case study, interdisciplinary guest speakers, and a project guiding each student through completing their own durable power of attorney.

Preparing Practice-Ready Nurses for End-of-Life and Comfort-Focused Care
November 4 at 2:00 p.m. (ET); 11:00 a.m. (PT)

Join us for a panel webinar featuring nurse educators who are finding innovative ways to prepare students and clinicians for end-of-life and comfort-focused care. Panelists will share their work and practical strategies you can adapt for your own teaching:

Julie Briere (Emmanuel College) will share the Curative-to-Comfort Care Toolbox, drawn from the experiences of morally resilient pediatric nurses and nurse practitioners, which helps pediatric and neonatal clinicians communicate, advocate, and support families with confidence and compassion as care shifts from cure to comfort.

Dr. Elizabeth Byrd and team (University of Alabama at Birmingham) will describe a backward-designed, longitudinal approach to end-of-life education that integrates knowledge, skills, and attitudes across the nursing curriculum.

Dr. Carole Kulik (San Francisco State University School of Nursing) will present a simulation-based approach that builds baccalaureate students’ confidence and cultural humility in guiding POLST completion and end-of-life conversations.
