GNSA Bulletin - April 2023 Edition Thursday, April 6, 2023 Emerging Leaders Jessica Vergara, MSN, APRN, AGACNP-BC, FNP-BC, FNP-C, CCRN DNP Program The University of Texas at El Paso Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2024 I decided to enroll in the DNP program because I noticed so much variance in the delivery of care in every facility I worked in. Also, I am an avid advocate for evidence-based practice and from my studies know that we are many years behind in the translation of evidence into practice. I decided to become a GNSA liaison because I feel very strongly in the pursuit of our terminal degrees and validation of our profession. I hope to inspire more junior nurses to continue on their path towards excellence and to demonstrate that nurses play a large role in patient care and positive outcomes. I hope to integrate multiple educational programs in the place I work. I am currently the Nurse Practitioner in critical care for Defense Health Agency in my local military training facility. As a military spouse, I hope to inspire and educate our soldiers for their current and future success whether in the military or as a civilian. Are you our next emerging leader? Noteworthy Publication: On March 20, 2023, Grantmakers in Health published an article by Michelle Greanias from the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) titled The Reimagining Nursing Initiative: Creating an Equitable Future by Investing in Nurse-Driven Solutions. The author, who serves as the Program Director for the ANF’s Reimagining Nursing Initiative, profiles how the foundation is supporting groundbreaking projects focused on transforming nursing to improve access, care, and health outcomes for all. The initiative addresses critical pain points within the profession, and all the projects, including one led by AACN on preparing more practice-ready nurses, focus on equity as a priority. Click here to complete the online application. Job Searching Job searching: an act that can simultaneously spark hope, excitement, and anxiety. Perhaps you have graduated or reached a milestone in your academic trajectory, allowing you to take on new opportunities. Maybe you are ready to advance professionally based on your interests, or maybe you need to find a better work environment that fits your professional and personal needs. Whatever the reason, we all must search for jobs at some point, so I have listed some tips that may help us on this journey below. Make a list of what is important to you in your next job. This can be a list of things you hope to accomplish professionally, your ideas for a work-life balance, or resources/benefits you would like to have in your next position. What is important to you right now? Asking this question may help you identify pathways to help you achieve professional goals without compromising your personal goals. Make connections and keep your resume/CV up to date. Connections can happen in many ways. You can send emails to inquire about positions and ask if there is someone you can talk to about the role you are interested in. It is also good to reach out to friends and acquaintances who are currently employed in places you wish to work. They may be able to share some tips or information about new job opportunities. Career fairs are another excellent way to make connections. Mark your calendars for the GNSA Career Readiness Week, April 17-21! During that week, we will have networking sessions with nursing leaders and information sessions on how to prepare great resumes and CVs. In the meantime, it is always a good idea to update your resume and/or CV at least once a semester. Did you present at a conference or had a manuscript published? Learn how to use a new software program? Or start a new job? Keeping track of events like this can keep your resumes/CV up to date and easier to tailor for job applications you find. As part of the GNSA Career Readiness Week, join the CV Swap taking place on April 18 at 11:00 am ET (register here) or the Resume Swap on April 19 at 11:00 am ET (register here). These events will allow you to share your resume/CV with a fellow colleague and receive constructive feedback. Search online, browse, daydream. There are many wonderful online resources for job searching. As GNSA members, you have access to the AACN Career Center, a great source for locating academic nursing jobs. You can also check out Beyond the Professoriate for non-academic jobs and job searching resources. Are there any health systems or companies that have sparked your interest over the years? If so, go check out their websites and see what opportunities are there. Sometimes it can also be nice to daydream and browse, you never know what you may find! Think of rejection as re-direction Job searching can be anxiety-producing because there is always a possibility of facing rejection after submitting your application. It can be so discouraging when a job does not work out the way we had hoped. It helps me to think of rejection as a form of re-direction. Maybe that organization was not a right fit for you. Try to learn what you can from the situation and apply it in your future endeavors. These are just a few tips for job searching that have helped my peers and me. WEBINARS Postdoctoral Education in Nursing: Types, Goals, and Opportunities April 25, 2 :00 pm ET Postdoctoral education is important for nurses interested in pursuing a career in a research-intensive setting. The program’s purpose is to increase the number of primary care nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and certified nurse midwives prepared to provide primary care services, mental health and substance use disorder care, and/or maternal health care.
